PAL like 24p

Wouldn't purchasing a PAL camcorder be much like having the 24p of the DVX100? I know the DVX has the Cine-Gamma, but you can adjust grain, etc. in post using products like Magic Bullet Looks.

Opinions on this?

You mean a PAL handi-cam type thing which just shoots 50i?

No. Not the same thing. If you want 24p, go for 24p.

I have a DVX-100 already.

I also have an NTSC GS320 I use as a second camera.

I was thinking of buying another GS500, I thought getting the PAL version would be better than an NTSC to coordinate footage, but I did forget the difference between p and i.

Thanks for the refresher course.

Just as a side note, because I am so new to working the DVX100, the GS320 (with smaller 1/6" 800k CCDS) shoots better footage than the DVX.

I guess when I learn to use it, that'll change.

The GS500 has 3 - 1/4.7" 1.07 Megapixel CCDs so I am expecting it to be pretty good as well.

I know the DVX is not made for point and shoot stuff. I bought the Burns & Sawyer DVD, but I'm no better. I guess the lighting is going to be one of the most important things I need to learn.

Right. As hard as it is to believe, there is a noticeable difference between 24p and 24p. It may not be noticed as a difference in frame rate right off, but you will see something a little bit strange about the motion.

PAL cameras run at 50i, which looks nothing like 24p or 25p. Nothing at all.

PAL progressive cameras (like a PAL DVX) run at 25p or 50i. There's a huge difference between those two.

So no, don't go thinking that some generic PAL camera is going to look like 24p. It doesn't.

I have an NV-gs300 cam and I would not say it shoots better footage than the DVX. 1/6 CCD's VS 1/3" CCD's is a massive difference. The GS300 is crap in low light, I mean crap, but if you pump around 4k of lighting into a night shoot and close down the iris you may have half a chance (the GS series of cams have a real habit of just going wham, here's 18db of grain, er I mean gain). It only shoots 50i but if you de-interlace and cc in MB you can get some nice looking footage if lit correctly.
Now the Pal DVX in 25p VS the NTSC DVX in 24p will show no noticable difference by eye. 25p is a slightly overcranked 24p.
But, 24p or 25p shot native on either version of the DVX will cream all over any PAL or NTSC cam shot in an interlaced mode and de-interlaced corrected with any NLE program.
And one other thing, if you want to start messing aroung with native PAL footage, unless your means of playback can support PAL eg/ your TV and or DVD player, your wasting your time cause it will need to be corrected back to 720x480 anyways (which ain't as easy as it sounds). Pal footage only has slight more vertical res anyway, 480 VS 576, its probably not worth the hassle.

I think he was commenting that your post says there's a difference between 24p and 24p, not 24p and 25p.

Bingo.

It's no fun giving him a hard time if he doesn't even know he's being given a hard time.

I pity the fool!
