PAL frame rates on the 7d and the different between 24 and 25p

I've just bought a 7D and would like to shoot in the equivalent of NTSC 24p, to achieve that standard film like frame rate for a narrative PAL project. Now on the frame rate menu section in PAL mode, I am presented with two similar options - 24p and 25p (not including to two 50p options).

What I need to clarify is, what is the difference between these two frame rates (24p and 25p) and is 24p the one I need to shoot on in PAL, to achieve the PAL equivalent of NTSC 24p?

Any clarification would be really appreciated. Thanks.

The 7D is capable of both 24p and 25p. The question you face is -- do you want this footage to be playable on television? If so, and you're in a PAL territory, then you want 25p.

If it's for web streaming or film transfer or something like that, 24p is fine. But if it's for PAL television, you want 25p.

Thank you Barry for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it. So if I'm understanding correctly, 24p on the PAL is the equivalent to 24p on NTSC? If this is the case, then is 25p on PAL mode, the equivalent of 30p in NTSC mode?

Define "equivalent". There is no 30p or 24p in PAL, let alone there is no PAL, because PAL is an analogue colour encoding system. For the 50Hz system that you have in Europe, there are 50p and 50i for broadcast plus 25p for DVD. Other frame rates are converted into one of these (50p is for 720p only). Obviously, 25p can be converted into 50Hz system much easier than 24p. To convert 25p into 50i you make two fields out of each frame (2-2 pulldown). To convert 25p into 50p you repeat each frame twice (2:2 frame repeat pattern, sometimes called frame pulldown). 24p is not a friendy rate for 50Hz systems, you will have to speed it up to 25p anyway, or to use weird pulldown sequences. Just use 25p and be thankful that you live in a country that does not have to deal with "fractional" frame rates or with 2-3 pulldown ;-)

AN other PAL/NTSC question. I was checking the UK (PAL) page from canon and found something related to the 7D which I am bit confused. Link is here

Movie size
1920 x 1080 (29.97, 25, 23.976 fps)
1280 x 720 (59.94, 50 fps)
640 x 480 (59.94, 50 fps)

Probably some typo ?
I don't think the UK/PAL versione is able to do 59.94/60

Hi Barry -

is 25p derived from 50Hz in UK etc. / AU (where I am) systems?
And no doubt 60Hz US systems = 30p?

By the way are you coming over here to do a release presentation for the new AG-AF100/1 when it ships? 8-) The last one of yours I attended (172?) was the best I've been to.
