PAL 25p Native wrapper with SanDisk Class 10

OK, I would like to start a thread to improve on settings for AVCHD and MJPEG with the latest ptool. I'm especially focusing on using:

- Wrapper in 25p Native mode
- SanDisk Extreme 30MB/s Class 10 SDHC (I'm using both 16 GB and 32 GB editions)
- All in the PAL world, for PAL models, so 25 (or 50) frames/sec. video.

Thanks

Ben

Ben. You also want to post if you are using the 8gb or 16gb card. The 16GB card is quite a bit faster in the benchmarks.
I am in PAL world also, but I skipped the 25P patch for stability.

I know I've posted this video link before, but it's a good example of 25P native mode 1080P and 720 50P footage shot in PAL on a Sandisk Class-10 SD card at the maximum C-settings for AVCHD. I only one lockup (on the Panny 20mm pancake - too much detail). The 25Pn setting was VERY stable.

Was that for FHD setting, so at 1080p ? Do you know the bitrate settings that were still stable?

I already noticed that when I use the 25pN with FHD and started changing AC3 audio-bitrate (upped to 384 kbit/s) and sample-frequency (lowered to 44100 Hz), the playback was not what it's supposed to be on my laptop (twice the speed or something..), but I will research this further when I narrow it down to what causes it.

At times it can be very hard to see if the errors are caused by the decoder (during playback) or are actually in the video-file.

hey guys!
PAL user here, GH13 running "c" settings.
ATTN powervideo i cant see the link??

I'm a GH-13 PAL user...it's always 1080p AVCHD to match my Canon 5D2's output and get along very well with these settings on 3x16Gb SanDisk Extreme 30 cards. Details from PTool 3.40d:
[Information]
Comment=25pNative; 3rdP battery;plus 30min;720p50to25;FHD/SH-50;H-32;22;OA-52;L-60
SD_Card=SanDisk 16Gb Extreme 30mb
Camera=GH1 v1.40
[Settings]
Prevent version compare=Checked
Third-party battery=Checked
30min limit removal=Checked
Native 24p/25p=Checked
720p50,00fps->25,00fps=Checked
Video Bitrate FHD/SH=50000000
Video Bitrate H=32000000
Video Bitrate L=22000000
Overall Bitrate=52000000
Limiting Bitrate=60000000

There's always a risk in this hacking of course but only ever had a couple of examples of a 'Card Not Fast enough' message so far and not sure why as it then shot the same scenes OK.
I do very long takes, pretty often exceeding the 4Gb limit OK, however when I did have a corrupt file on a card I noticed that 'PhotofunStudio' wouldn't see any of the other OK AVCHD video files and on that occasion I used the GH-1 Importer Tool' to get these files instead.

powervideo, could you share your settings please?

Sure, from what I remember!:huh: I shot in AVCHD becasue of the lack of 25P in MJPEG. I basically used the maximum C-settings in the hack. I think it was 50-52-60. I also checked 25Pn Native. I left audio as it was. I've blown the mic input of my CAM1, I think because of the powered intervelometer I use.

Other notes;

  • Class-10 30mbs Sandisk Extreme
  • Zeiss Cointax Primes (only had lockup with the 20mm Pancake)
  • Smooth picture setting
  • 25Pn
  • 1080P 25P for most shots, 720 50P for slomos, upscaled in Premiere to 1080P
  • No real colour grading, just some levels on a few shots and two vignettes. Basically as shot in-camera with location lighting
I can't think of anything else. Ask if I've missed anything. (Hoping the new GH2 is even better)

Cheers,
Peter

I get error with powervideo's settings when shooting detailed scene with leaves on a tripod.
(Sandisk 16gb class 10)

Postfade,
after recording the same scene with your settings i've got the same error..
did you check also the 'presset bitrate' options or GOP?

my point of interest is native 25p really that important for us PAL users? Can we not just drop into a 25p timeline or is it not as simple as that?

please discuss...=)

Hi Peter,

Thanks for taking the time to explain your workflow to us all.

Have you shot any footage without native 25P? My non-native 25P footage has great detail but doesn't quite seem to have the 25P motion that I was used to with my DVX. I've heard about instability issues shooting native, but will definitely try it out on your reccomendation.

Do you understand the whole "25P in an interlaced wrapper" of shooting at 50i? If so, please explain it!
I find it very confusing!:zombie_smiley:

THANK YOU

PS How do you upscale 720 to 1080 in Premiere?

Feon,

I only had lockup with the 20mm in detailed moving shots. The old Zeiss primes were no problem. What lenses are you using?

I was using Super Takumar 50 1.4 closed to f11.
When I shoot handheld there was no problem, but on tripod got error after some seconds.

Yes that is what i'm doing with Sony Vegas and very happy with the results. I still shoot most stuff in FH for the 50fps just because i personally love the look of 720p and it matches perfectly with HMC 152 720p (which is this cameras sweet spot). Low motion narrative and beauty shots i still use FHD at 50i.

BTW the GH13 kills my HMC for IQ in my eyes, bit awkward to handle but fits in the airplane travel bag unreal. I look like a regular tourist :cheesy:

I'm quite happy with motion when just dropping it into a 25p timeline too. and you're right about 720 being the sweet spot. people also don't take me seriously when i pull the little thing out especially with a 20mm on it, even more reason why i like it so much..ha.

rambooc1, MR Fanny,

could you share your most stable settings?

After a heap of testing and posting here, i finally settled on ipowells stable settings for AVCHD and Mpeg, leaving the camera at 50i when in FHD mode. I now only use Sandisc extreme 16gb 30MB/s card and have not had a failure even with 20mm pancake. Couldn't be happier.

But if Chris or Vitaliy can improve the low detail bitrate i may be tempted to change.

Only other advice i can give is to nail exposure every time and you will never see colour noise or banding.

Cheers Rambo

previously i was running the "B" 32Mb settings because i shoot alot at 1/30th in 720 and wanted to keep the high bitrate. Settings higher that 35Mb makes the bitrate crash down to 3Mbits at 720 1/30th, it is fine at 1/50th though which makes one scratch their head.

have been shooting with lpowell's 40Mb settings with High setting at 32Mb for that needed 1/30th for the past 2 weeks with no issues yet. Mind you I rarely shoot outdoor grass and foliage shots so it works well for me.

Is actually the ipowells stable 40mbps AVCHD compareble to 5ds quality? From the images in the thread it doesn't look very good...
