Pakage purchase, & spesifics

I am buying a little bundle for myself including an HVX before the free card and the B. Book promo is over, so I have to get a shotgun among other things. I told the sales rep that I heard the Rode NTG-2 4gives better sound quality than the Audio Tecnica AT897, and that I found it for $37.- less than his AT897 $286.- He said that his sound tech said the AT897 is almost as good, and that Rode does not have the best customer care if something happened to the mic, and that that in itself should be enough to steer me towards the purchase of the AT.
I am keeping in mind that even though it is in their best interest to help me get more work so I come back with more cash to spend, he still IS a sales rep, and he might not be ale to make as much from the sale of an NTG-2... I never bought from them (VTP) but with my recent move I am just going by the fact that they are down the street from me, I got them from the Panasonic site, and their prices.

Any words of wisdom? Please...

I am prety set on the rest of the stuff but havent offered others to beat their price yet (my shipping included):

From VTP:
_HVX-200 (qualifies for 8G and B. Book rebate) $5000
_Cartoni F100 Focus head and A304 (2-stage sticks $1385
_Audio Tecnica AT897 shotgun mic $286
_Boom Pole (aluminum, 4-section 9 ft.) $138
_XLR 25 ft. $30
_Pelican 1600 (with pick n' pluck) $147

From B&H:
_Tiffen 82mm Fiilter Kit (Circular Pola, Clear, Wanm UV17) $175

Downloads:
DvRack (HD) $795
Raiylight 2.0 $195

Also, two 5600 batteries (and a t-shirt!) from right here $171

TOTAL $8322

all I have left to do is e-mail this list to other companies... it is a lot of work, but I'm really trying to spend the least possible.

thanks.... I am planning on getting these next and sort of in this order:

_Headphones (Senhaiser HD201) amazon.com $20
I just want some that wrap around my ears.

_XLR (maybe 15 ft.) wherever ~$20
Good point on the back-up, plus might end up buying one of those little "cheaper" boxes for the boom operator to be able to scan the audio and the XLR from the box will then be needed anyway. This so we both can hear everything. Tht depending on who I work on my stuff with... I might be working with a sound tech with equipment, then the XLR will only be a backup.

_Fig Rig! wherever ~$300
This will allow me to do a lot without having a dolly... I am quite steady myself, so I'll be able to do great chest-height dolly look, and I might be able to get a decent replacement for other lower dolly shots with several takes. Plus all the fun you can have with the standard frenetic fig rig type stuff and some ok steadycam type shots. Next thing will be to build a dolly and a crane or buy the cheaper ones.

_External HDD/s possibly pricegrabber.com $tbd
I might have to buy an external right away, but kinda hoping to be able to spend $600 before I do to get one of those enclosures that take any desktop HDDs and with the push of a button link them in all kinds of configurations, plus two 500GB HDDs (or bigger if they drop in price before I buy them).

_Bebob Foxi $465

_Matte Box geardear.com ~$400
These should do, of course if I am rolling on $$$ things would be different.

_On-Camera monitor (Marshall) dunno.com $1700

_FS-100 or :) CineScope :)

PLEASE SAY ANYTHING YOU MIGHT THINK NO MATTER HOW SMALL, CAUSE I MIGHT BE PUTTING MY MONEY ON THEIR HANDS AS EARLY AS MONDAY!
Million thanks in advance!

For the Mic, I would go with Audio Technica AT4073, It's a bit more expensive but much better. I would go with StormCase, not Pelican (they are nicer and slightly less expensive), for filters get the UV 82mm only, to protect your lens, for all other get 4x4 filters to use with your mattbox, it would be very difficult if not imposible to use a a circular polarizer without taking out the panasonic or any other mattebox... Geardear, I would not recomend it, I bought one, sold it a month later, a good idea, but not quite ready for prime time. You are obviously using a PC, but for the price of DVrack and Raylight, I would buy FCP... obviously you would need a Mac as well, so okay...more expensive if you don't have one... Not trying to sell you a mac, but the workflow with Panasonic P2 is so much better with FCP, it seems to make everything easier...My experience anyway...

my 2c. Best of luck.

THANKS FOR YOUR POST!!!

I'd love to edit in FCT! I might buy a G5 down the line, right now editing on Vegas on a 2.2 AMD 64!!!! aghhhh.... raylight should make me able to edit, but it won't be fun, for money projects I will outsource post.
I might be getting a Rode NTG-2, just posted a desperate plea for suggestions on the Audio section, but I can't spend more now...
I am spending $9,000 after taxes and really only should spend $8,500.

I figured if I treat it well I will be able to sell it later and might be working with a sound guy with his own equipment on the non-100%-personal projects.

True, but you could get a Manfrotto with 503 head for about $500. The Focus is nice, no doubt, but the Manfrotto will do a great job as well... Boom pole, get a used one on ebay... Here you go I just saved you at least $800

that would save me $250 on the head and about $40 on the pole... about $300 not $800... and the head will be able to take rental 35mm adapter, heavier lenses, on camera monitor and so on if I shoot something with budget and still save on the sticks and camera. I guess what I am trying to say is that I'd rther spend now than have to sell and upgrade loosing $50 here and $100 there when switching... Hell! I'll just PM you and get you for the day with your sound equipment...

tell me what you think about this:

Yeah, don't skimp on the tripod head. Get the best you can afford. It will be worth it.

Also, don't waste your money on a Fig-Rig. It's not a Steadicam by a long shot and it won't ever reaplace a dolly. You'd be better off spending that money on a basic dolly or dolly wheels. Might I recomend getting this kit: http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/dolly/ It's in the same price rance, add a bit of PVC pipe and a piece of wood and you have much more than a Fig-Rig will ever do. If you want a dolly, get a dolly. If you want a Steadicam, you will have to get a Steadicam. You know this allready. :)

Actually the Manfrotto include legs and head for $500(and cool bag too)...that's actually $885 saving.
1385-500=885
Again, I would spend more money on the mic, audio is really 50% of the story, trust me on that.there is nothing worst than getting great footage and to realize later in the editing suite that your audio is crappy.

I know it is... and it hurts not to have more $$$ I will have to get the better camera and deal with the audio, only want to get good stuff... so I can get good cam good tripod, the software I need and the rest sux for now....
My options are the AT897 or the Rode NTG-2. Help me and tell me which you like better. Then later on tell me what to replace it wit when I can.

Ok, so this will be it for me start up audio (till I get more $):

_Boom pole (4-section 9ft. aluminum)
$138 at http://www.vtpcorp.com/
_XLR cables (Audio Tecnica) 30ft and 50ft.
$47.90 (+ shipp) www.B&H.com
_Headphones (Sennheiser HD201)

_SSM-1 SABRA-SOM Universal Shock-Mount
$49 (shipped with mic) http://www.sound-room.com/inc/sdetail/284

TOTAL $514.7

only $14.7 more than what I set out to get, must be fate!

I should be good for indoors for a long time, and I'll get good quality VO in my walk-in closet crammed with my girl's clothes, then with the big foam and a home made fur fitted on in I should be ok outside if the wind doesn't pick up too much...
