Packing problems. Any suggestions?

Hi everyone,

I leave for Germany and Ireland on Thursday and I'm at a stand still on this packing thing.

I went out and bought a bigger suitcase to fit all my stuff in. My thing is, I simply must travel with one wheeled bag and my backpack. So I've spent two days attacking this packing situation like a crazy dictator. It's almost there, I can actually fit everything into one bag BUT its too snug for my comfort. So... This is what I'm considering and I'm puting it on the board to get other thoughts, in case I've been working this thing too long and can't see any new solutions.

The biggest issue with this packing is that I have my tripod in the bag. It is a good one and I've taken the head off so the legs could also fit in there easily. Part of why I put it in there is because it only has a soft case and I wanted it protected so its surrounded by my coats.

All of my clothes are in 2 of those vaccuum bags so they take up very little space (yeah 3 weeks worth of clothes, those things are awesome).

But I could eliminate the snug problem if I simply removed the tripod legs out of the case. So I was thinking of just saying screw it and just checking the tripod in it's soft case... that was one option....

My other option is, I could also get more space if I took the tripod leg bolts out to remove the legs from the spreader and top part and laid everything down flat.

What do you all think? Can you think of any other way?

And no there is no time for me to get a hard case and just check the tripod. I have another smaller tripod and a dinky cheap one but I don't want to take either. I plan on doing some video work on top of one of those topless buses in Dublin and I'll need the good tripod for that.

And does anyone know if I would have problems having my light bulbs in my carryon? They are wrapped in bubble wrap.

Thanks!

Why are you limeted to one rolling suitcase? Mobility?

Don't check the legs without a hard shell around them. What is the largest diamiter of the legs? Can you get a large mailing-tube and pack in that?

Also.. what light bulbs are you carrying? and why?

Okie doke. Yeah its a mobility thing. I agree on the checking the legs thing. The mailing tube is a good idea. I went ahead tho and put them back in the center of the bag, cushioned inbetween the legs and all around, by clothes. Won't be as much of an issue when I unload the tons of halloween candy I'm bringing for my friend in Germany on my first stop.

I was planning on taking a couple of light bulbs for my Smith Victor movie light I'm taking with me. I was looking online for possible places to pick up these bulbs in Dublin and I didn't see anything. I can't really risk doing one on one interviews without this light.

The power is 220v/240v here in Europe, so if you are bringing bulbs from the US, don't bring 'regular' 110v ones!

hmmm the volatage on this one says 120v. I have a power converter. But I don't know, I need bulbs.

alright, I found some places in Dublin I can probably get bulbs from. Would think this would be an issue with the socket too... I don't know.

Well a 120v bulb plugged into 220v will be really bright .. for just a moment. And then they will be dead. Not worth bringing them if you don't have a converter.

How many Watts are your lights? Because it's pretty rare to find converters powerfull enough. (If you use an underpowered converter, then the bulb just goes prety dim and out after a moment - around the same time that you smell smoke from the converter.)

I'd recomend trying to find some bulbs - there are loads of places here in Europe that sell them of course; can you get some mail-ordered directly to where you will be going?

EDIT: great you found some! :) You just need a physical adapter for the plugs to make them fit the holes, no active adaption/conversion needed there.

Yes I have an adapter as well for the holes. Can't mail order anything, I'm shooting pretty much right away. I'm going to bring my bulbs anyway, just in case things get harry.

Thanks for you help. :)
