I ordered my package containing 2-8gb P2s a month ago from my trusted dealer, and Im supposed to be in the first batch (who told me today that it should be shipped in DEC), but Im wondering why 4 4gb cards are so much cheaper than 2 8gb P2 cards. It adds up to the same GBs and though you have to swap more often, with 4 its easier to transfer while you record. My issue is that if I change my order now I will go to the back of the line, and money has gotten tighter. If I find a way to stay with the 8gbs I'll be hating myself when 16gbs are out by summer. Is anyone going with the 8gb?

Hey Sunstream your lucky!
If I could have afforded to buy the camera with two 8gigs a month ago - I wouldn't care a damn about the prices or the difference between them and 4gigs because I'd simply have two 8gigs!!! And wouldn't that be sweet.
Don't fret, they'll be fantastic and I would prefer them regardless of cost to what I have ordered - two 4gigs - if I could have afforded. Wait until you use them and you'll be glad they're 8gigs.
Happy filming! Don't even dream of changing your order, that's my advice, get it asap and enjoy.......

2GB cards won't work, so that's not really a valid poll option.

The 4gb's are a much better deal, at current pricing levels. The only rational reason for going for the 8gb's over the 4's (you can get six 4's for less than two 8's) is if you absolutely positively must have the longer runtime in the camera without swapping. But if you don't need that, the 4gb's are a lot more flexible and a lot less expensive on a per-minute basis.

I just hate to lose my spot in the first shipment to start over because I want to change the package from 8gbs to 4gbs, but I need to save the money and it is significant. Maybe I can rent out the 8gbs or even sell them right away, but is there a demand

Better talk to your dealer. There's some solid reports that 8GB cards won't even ship until mid-late January, even February and pricing will be adjusted then. Also, it's not like Panny is selling these cards right in the HVX200 boxes as an all boxed-up package. Your position in line shouldn't change just because you want to select different P2 cards. If your dealer is going to bump you to the back of the line over something like that, then that's pretty slimey.

I like that the poll is now at 111%. It's kind of like the amp in Spinal Tap, this one goes to 11..

I am buying (1) 4 gig card.
Most of my stuff is a couple takes at a time, and then transfer.
I can wait 6 months for the second card(s). I am gambling that the price on 4 gigs will drop in half in 6-8 months.

That shouldn't be a problem. I just got off the phone with my dealer here in Canada. The CDN pricing has just come down to a great point, so I upgraded my order from a single 4GB card to the 2 x 4GB bundle. I'm still in the same place on the list.

2 8GBs and some external drives. Actually I think I'll glue the little P2 door at the back shut. The cards can stay in and no durt can come in. :)

OK Ive decided to just go with the 2-4gb, and maybe add one 4gb and save up for external - just doesnt make sense to spend the money for 8gb when you can get 3 4gb for the price of 1. In the end the 8gb will not be enough - Im gonna need the external anyway.

Clearly if you're shooting feature or even doc work the best alternative at this point is 8GB. But it's hard to ignore the price point. I have a feature film client for January and they'd clearly prefer the 8GB. I cannot justify paying more (and charging more) for an 8GB when I can buy 6 x 4GB for less than 2 xx 8GB.

i always like smaller better. also in stills i prefer 512MB over 1GB. if something goes wrong you only lose so much. also if you want stuff faster you can throw in that extra card e.g. all interviews on one and all action on the others......then you have stuff presorted in the cards.
of course 128GB would be cool, but 2000+ for 8GB is simply too steep a pricetag.
