p2log w/ DVD's

My client wants to be able to log my P2 footage on an upcoming shoot himself. I"m providing him with DVD's of all the footage.

I tried viewing a clip with P2log demo off a DVD backup, and it played for a moment and then stopped playing, though the playback head kept moving. It was a 720p/24pn shot at 60frames shot that choked P2log up. I guess the data throughput of the internal DVD player isn't fast enough?
Again this is the Demo. Has anyone else had this problem? Might the full version of P2log not have this issue?
I suppose he could copy everything on to a hard drive, but it would be great if he could work on the plane back from the shoot, for example.

DVD ain't strong enough...

You were right in your thinking that it was the DVD player. That's your problem, it can't process the file is the plain problem. P2 Log won't care where the material is. So yah you will need to dump it on a hdd for him to log with.

cheers.

thanks for the reply.

Thats what I figured. I was hoping that there might be some secret Cache method whereby slow drives would be able to function.

cheers to you!

Luck me most of the material will be shot on Verycam. Just a little "B' camera stuff for P2.

If you have access to a AJ-1200 you might want to consider making DVCPro tape backups. We're in the same boat. We're all varicam with just a little HVX here and there when its a tight squeeze and we need a smaller camera. If you make the tapes you get the solid backup/archive and you can keep on with the same workflow as for the rest of your shoot (especially handy if you're doing an offline/online one).

You can even still shoot at 720pN to conserve shooting space on the cards. When you dump over to the cassette it'll just automatically become 720p (just like the Varicam).

cheers.

Good idea. Unfortunately I have no deck. Though I have heard that they are coming WAY down in price.
I was talking to the editor yesterday and he told me that this particular piece will be finished SD. As a result they actually play back the footage shot on the P2 through the cameras component out to the avid. They say that the cameras down convertor is much better looking than the Avids.... ? Sounds crazy to me, but I'm just the artist out in the field...

nonetheless, the director wants to log the footage. So the only solution I 've come up with is to burn DVDs for the editor and (ugh) bring an external hard drive on the shoot to put all the p2 footage on for the director to take home and log.

I guess I"m just going to buy the p2log rather than the more expensive versions. From what I can tell, it doesn't make much sense to pay the extra $$ for the other versions.

p.s. on another note, have you tried using the windows scene file convertor to convert "f" series scene files to "h" series files?

Never heard of it...

Never heard of it...

In regard to your p.s., I've never heard of the windows scene file convertor, so a definite no on whether or not I've done that...

As for the SD down convert, yes I too would trust the camera's one over Avid's. I think a lot of the NLE developers assume the SD option would be for offline purposes so it doesn't necessarily have to look that good. I down convert through the AJ-1200 myself, and the results are solid for our purposes (though we are doing an actual offline edit, so we're not too nit picky on the quality for the SD footage).

cheers.
