I need quick clarification on this:

I am using P2CMS with a MBP - after exporting the footage off the card to a virtual P@ card in a folder on my drive, there LASTCLIP file is gone - will I be ok getting footage into FCP?

thanks

p2cms doesn't make the lastclip file. you will be fine. just have to select all those folders and import them into the log n transfer window. each folder=1 clip.

freaked me out at first too.

ok thanks... when you say "each folder" do you mean each virtual P@ card folder?
If so, how can each folder = one clip when the camera rolled and cut several times?

thnx

Lastclip.txt is necessary to successfully catalog the directory structure of an actual P2 card, specifically the location of spanned clips between two cards. With P2CMS, all information is transferred to separate folders on one hard drive volume and any spanned clips are rejoined. Thus, the need for the lastclip.txt files is eliminated.

dear God in heaven above... i think this thread just saved me a heartattack... i used p2cms as well this weekend and the lack of a lastclip.txt file was/is freaking me out. i don't have access to a mac or fcp6 until wednesday night- but i need to hear someone say it is going to be okay...
i used one p2 card and had to offload it 3 times during the day of shooting. so now i have 3 different content folders named contents1, contents2, and contents3... will i be okay getting this into fcp6- please oh dear God please...
can someone walk me thru the steps on how to get fcp to import these folders (which are now on a FAT32 external hard drive as well as still on my pc desktop).

The footage will import in fine as long as you go and put those contents folders in their own folder with its own name.. i tend to go with card 01 card 02 card 03 etc.

you will also need to get rid of the number on the end of the contents folder name.

sorry joe, i do not completely understand. are you saying i need to rename my current folders which I have named contents1, contents2, and contents3 to card01, card02 and card03?

You cannot change the names of the contents folders! That's a big no-no.

So make a new directory called Card01, and then put the contents1 folder within it and change its name back to CONTENTS. Same for 2 & 3.

I don't have FCP in front of me so bare with me here. All you have to do in FCP is go FILE > LOG and TRANSFER. In the screen that pops up, click the little folder icon on the top left part of the screen. Navigate to your first folder which you said was "contents1", click on that folder and hit ok. You'll see video clips appear in that pop up window. Now click on what ever clip or clips that you want to import and hit that import button. It'll begin importing. :)

EDIT: Yeah as Barry said, I wouldn't change the original contents folder name! I don't know if it's a good or bad thing regarding post P2 importing but as an IT professional I know that leaving the original file structure, inclucing name convention, is ALWAYS best practice! :)

admittedly, ive never looked deeply into p2cms on the mac. but what is it that it does that simply dragging and dropping card contents to a hard drive does not?

seems to me that there are always posts about p2cms problems. ive never once had an issue dragging and dropping...

It verifies the data being transfered from P2 to PC to ensure the data integrity.

To be honest with you, if I were working on a windows machine, I don't think there's any difference in moving the data if you did it in the command prompt using the "copy /v" command

If a clip needs repairing after you have done a transfer
can you then copy that entire transfer back to the card so that the camera can do the repair?

That doesn't make any sense. simply right click on the folder and select "rename" or just click on the folder and hit "F2" to rename it back to "CONTENTS"

Yea but the question wasn't about renaming, but about copying a file only to discover it needs to be repaired. Would copying back the contents to a p2 card and then putting that card in the camera for a repair work?

That's the question.

back from Costa Rica and the shoot went great!

Although the dual adapter is a bit of a pain in the feild... but it did work smoothly following the FAQ Barry wrote.

we shot 720 24PN and did some 60P stuff for slo-mo, but I am not sure about how to get it into an FCP sequence to take advantage of the extra frames for slo mo - can some one walk me through that?
maybe it is worth it's own thread...

no

That's the answer :)

yeah, i will never use p2cms again... will just drag and drop from this point forward as well!

as for naming the contents folders wrong- i just did that so that it would not overwrite the existing contents folder that would be in place from the previous offload... i should have set up folders to begin with huh?

thanks again for all the help, i will have a mac to start the process tomorrow!

okay,
so i am sitting in the edit bay right now. when i do the log and transfer and choose the folder that i created (which contains contents1) it gives me a warning. i suppose this warning is due to the fact that i added that "1" to the end of the contents folder? is that correct? if so, i will need to run home and put the folders on this external again without the 1,2, and 3 (i know- barry told me).
here is my question... now that i have changed each of the offload content folders to contents1, contents2 and contents3... can i just go back and take off the 1,2 and 3 and everything will be fine?
new plan is to make card01, card02, and card03 folders and then take each of the "contents" folders to the appropriate card folder. just wondering if i can just take the 1,2 and 3 off for this system to work?
