P2CMS & Formatter freezes with out fail?

I use an older Powerbook G4 with a PCMCIA slot and the P2 formatter and P2CMS programs fail every time. Not always in the same spot or action, but I can guarantee that my laptop will freeze to the point where I can't even move my mouse each time I use these.

Has anyone encountered similar problems? What's wrong?
 
When do they freeze? I believe P2CMS requires an intel CPU to view HD footage. Could this be the problem?
