P2CMS and LASTCLIP.TXT

Ok, so im running down some workflow ideas for an upcoming shoot with the Hvx.

Using P2CMS on a PC Laptop to ingest P2 cards to an external hard drive.
Everything works as it should seeing and ingesting 4GB P2 Cards.

Moving the external Drive over to a Mac running FCP 6
P2CMS(for Macintosh) can see and play the files just like on the PC. Of course there is no LASTCLIP.TXT file and FCP cant Log and Transfer the clips.

Doing an "Export" from P2CMS creates another folder with the clips that FCP CAN Import

~BUT~
There is NO LASTCLIP.TXT file.
Since FCP can import the footage using Log and Transfer this is ok from an editing standpoint. However from an archiving point of view this bothers me.

Can somebody shed some light on whats going on and why there is no LASTCLIP.TXT file, but FCP is still able to import?

Im most likely going to use P2 Genie for this particular shoot since I am planning on dumping the 4GB P2s to external then DVD+R for archiving.

There is no need for lastclip.txt because P2 CMS essentially does away with the P2 card structure itself, making each clip into a discrete clip with no necessary connection to others. The LASTCLIP.TXT file is used by the camera to track spanned clips that start on one card and end on another. With P2 CMS this relationship is no longer necessary. Trust me, this is much better for archiving because you can organize individual clips according to their content rather than the reels they were shot on.

Hey Noah,

I'm using a similar workflow for an upcoming shoot, but I use P2 Genie. In another thread, Barry was talking about not using P2 Genie to erase the cards because the new firmware for the HVX has trouble recognizing the card. Is that still the case in this instance? And should we just format the card in camera after offloading the clips?

thanks in advance!

I'd do it in camera. P2 is a solid offloader but in general the Mac is not the best place to format the cards. The camera is followed by the P2 Store.
