P2 to Avid

Respected User
Not sure about you other working stiffs, but I'm still running into a lot of ad agencies and editors who are bound to their Avid systems by both their wallets and their minds.
What's the latest state of the convergence between P2, .mxf files and Avids?
Any suggestion on maximized workflow efficiency? I don't wanna downconvert to Digibeta.

Judging from the number of posts on this website claiming a variety of Mac/FCP/P2 issues, perhaps those agencies and editors have the right idea.

FCP ain't that bad...

FCP ain't that bad...

You have to take the number of FCP/P2 complaints on this board with a grain of salt. How many people are going to make threads saying, "hey I have no problem and I need no help because my FCP/P2 workflow is working smooth as can be." Sure some make replies to others complaints with that, but how many people having successes are here letting us know about it?

I'm not pro FCP, I'm not anti-Avid (personally I like many things about Avid over FCP), but you can't beat down FCP too easily just based on threads in the forum. Despite its age and price and so called quality, Avid is not free of its own issues (P2 and non-P2). Also, if most P2 users are FCP users, well again you'll get more FCP related complaints just because of the math.

Anyway...

cheers.

People will always resist change, particularly if it renders an investment obsolete. Just ask your local blacksmith.
Happily we need not kill our horses, just embrace the electric cars...
I was able to get 24pn files to shine brightly on an Avid Adrenalin HD since posting this thread, the editor was happy to be able to get behind my project, and it justified to his executive producer the investment / upgrade to an HD capable room. It's the guys who don't want to upgrade, who are stuck where they are and therefore want to hold others back, and for whom SD is "good enough" that we have to push on or out...

It's mixed. Avid is perfect for 720 24pN and 1080p encoded to 60i because it's supported MXFs for a while. Barry himself has said that all the drop frame issues he's seen with FCP he's yet to see happen with Avid. FCP requires one to use 3rd party software to convert the MXFs into AVI references. This is a bit of a hassle and makes a somewhat confusing media set up more convoluted.

That said, FCP has the ability to remove redundant frames from 24p encoded to 60i which Avid unfortunatly won't do to it's MXFs.

Do you perhaps mean Adobe here? I've never used AVI's w/ FCP myself, but perhaps there is some kind of workflow I'm otherwise unaware of?

cheers.

Perhaps. I remember being told that FCP has to convert the files to MXF but perhaps it's able to do it on it's own and it's only Vegas and Adobe that need to use Raylight or Cineform.

Fcp = Mov

Fcp = Mov

FCP does swap out wrappers. It swaps from MXF to MOV (think Apple, think Quicktime...). It does do it on its own. There's a specific, 'Import Panasonic P2' menu option.

cheers.
