..i dont disagree that handing over a tape is going to be something that needs to be dealt with.. but read my post 4 posts up again.. im just saying that the camera itself doesnt need to have the tape drive, and would for the most part be better off with an HDD. if it has tape i wouldnt complain in the least id rather have more options than less. but i just dont see it happening. ..either way well know soon enough. :)

Only 8 days until the Press Conference. David from Panasonic is a product manager just like Jan. He's under the same strict orders as the rest of us.

First time in on this conversation. I own a DVX and love it. Am really looking forward to the new pany. I think solid state is the way of the future. The P2 cards will be a different story, as far as price point etc. One thing that cracks me up, the shop I work out of, uses one of those quickie FW buses to archive stuff. HDs are less than $1 a gig, and will continue to drop. I can't understand that a similar set-up (OEM) can't be worked out for shooting. Imagine dropping a new 250 gig into a slot. Like the chocolate bar batteries. We are woried that the 8 gig P2 card will be cheap enough. Sounds bizarre when standing beside a 250gig HD at less than $1/gig. I wonder if an aftermarket HD back system could be used on the new pany? ..seeya at NAB

I'm with you Knock out. It's likely there will be a hard drive in the future of the P2 slot. It only makes sense.

I would much rather have a P2 slot than a hard drive slot in the camera. The idea of the soild state recording is that it has no moving parts that can get smacked around while your filming. That was always my concern with the portable HDs like Firestore and the Quickstream. Maybe for someone that has their camera mounted to a tripod the whole time that really isn't a concern. But I want a camera that I could put in a car crash and have it record, if I wanted to. Maybe I'm thinking a little extreme here put it sounds like the P2 media will put this camera on the level with film cameras...as for as conditions it can record in. That to me would be a huge plus.

I agree to some extent but still, nobody is going to smack their camera around for fear of whacking the lens movement. Laptop hard drives are pretty durable. I do understand though your point in that if you want to go to the amazon you want the least amount of failure you can get.

Sorry, it's me the party pooper. IF this year we will see 8GB Ps cards then assuming what this camera offers we could record up to let's say 50 min. - 1 hour of HD video. Then we eject the two cards (assuming $1000,- each? Is that right?) and flip in two new ones, because during the shooting we don't have time nor a notebook to save the content to HDD. Well there we are - another hour. And if the weather is fine we shoot on.
After 3 hours (that's the average shot we do here) we filled media worth $ 6000,- hopefully we have tomorrow off otherwise we will have to buy some new cards if we cannot save them to HDD. Go for a longer trip to film stuff in another country where you don't want to bring a big drive and notebook you will be carrying thousends of $ just for your media...

At the moment we are shooting HDV, tapes are about $7,- per hour....

Sorry, but there will have to be some moe development in this area before it becomes really usable.

That's a sure thing. Unless Panasonic had speed up this development and will present 8Gb P2 cards for 100 bucks each on NAB2005.
But even if they can't deliver that on NAB2005, there's till hope you know. The HVX200 can be the camera of 2010

j/k.

Maybe that's a hint as to when the camera will be released too?? They special ordered enough so every camera gets 2 to get the price down? Ah ha!

It seems they want to release it in December, at the price of 650,000 Japanese Yen, roughly $6000. That's only for the camera.

Does anyone know if it's theoretically possible to record DVCPRO HD footage to DV25 tape?? Unless they run a tape 4 times as fast as current DV25 tape mech does, it won't catch up with DVCPRO HD's 100Mbps datarate. Or even DVCPRO 50 is unlikely on that matter. Or do they have any other work-around, like caching the 100Mbps data onto memory or something then load it to DV25 tape, with slower 25Mbps datarate. What do you think?

The Japanese rep said from-the-lens-to-the-eye-piece length is almost same as DVX100, but slightly fatter sideways. So it's unlikely they put tape drive other than DV25 due to size limit. (Two P2 slots would go at the back of the camera, a current headphone jack is staying I guess)

I totally don't have any idea if HVX200 can do direct HDD recording or not, but the current price point of 4GB P2 card (200,000 Japanese Yen, roughly $1840) seems bit high, and could be the determent for some from doing HD for a while.

But anyway, even if you gotta buy at least two P2 cards, I think "under $10000" is definitely a bargain, and the camera will revolutionalize once again :-)

Idea for Pana

Idea for Pana

Jan you could get engineering to make and external P2 Box with lithium rechargeable battery that can record anything, give it firewire, svideo composite inputs.

You can have a P2 box with a nice LCD and a few menu buttons, have the option to record to P2 in 4:2:2, People with a DVX can just buy this external Box and poof

Tape and P2 just like that

P2 sales will easily grow, think about that a portable P2 flash VCR

I should of been working for Panasonic for years

Jan hook it up :-/

I hope, that there will be no tape drive OR a tape drive for all the DVCPRO types. A tape drive only for DVCPRO25/50 does not make a sense for me. I think, the best would be, the HVX200 comes with P2 only and it will be sold for under 5.000 bucks and Panasonic will reduce the prices for P2 cards dramatically.

I personally will not buy the camera if it does not have some kind of tape deck. I will not be able to afford the P2 cards at $2000 a piece and the record times of those cards are way to low for me. I need a minimum of 1 hour record times. If it does not have some kind of DV deck I will have to wait until P2 prices go way down or someone else comes out with a better cam. I understand I won't be able to record HD to SD but it would at least have me able to use the HDX with my DVX for multicam shoots at Standard Definition.

I don't think I am alone here. I refuse to pay that much money for P2 cards. I will have to wait a couple of years for the price to come down. In the mean time I will probably purchase somone elses, Hmm, HD camera to get my HD shots.

Would Panny let this happen? I don't think so, but if they do, I'm not buying it.

Your not alone and Panasonic knows it. The ad does say affordable. Under $5,000 with DV tape drive and two P2 cards. That would sell tons of cameras.

It makes sense to keep a DV tape drive somewhere in the picture - preferably on the cam. Panasonic surely does not believe that shooters want more external gear to carry around with them.

A tape drive just for DVCPRO25 does not make any sense. If you want to make films in standard definition, use the DVX. Why should you buy a HVX, if you only want to use it in SD? The HVX is HD, so please, Panasonic, do not make any compromise. Somebody, who pays 5.000 bucks or more, pays it for HD.

If it has 16:9 chips, that's a big reason why I'd use the camera over the DVX, even for standard def. Not to mention what I'm sure will be the countless tweaks and improvements over the DVX in terms of usability and performance. Unless of course, Panasonic releases a revamped DVX as well.

Also, recording at 1080 24P isn't going to give you a lot of recording time (until bigger capacity P2 cards become available) yet.

I was just thinking that Robert. All this bitching about how much P2 is and how it doesn't record a lot...yet. If you don't want to have HD and want to stay with an already kickass camera then do it. To me it would be retarted of Panasonic to have a tape drive. Especialy one that records DV25. What would be the point of that on a new camera. I understand that people want to get the HVX when it comes out and just wait for the prices of the P2 cards to drop and for the storage capacity to go up. But if your going to do that just wait on buying that camera.
