p2 Store with 16 Gb Cards

According to the firmware update page, the P2 Store will get a firmware update in June 2007 to make it compatible with 16GB cards.

Not much of a store on P2 store though with 16GB cards... only four. Not worth the money. They should make a bigger one.

Are you sure that even 4 will fit? If only 15 4 gig cards fit (15x4=60) why would 4 16 gig cards fit? (16x4=64). Unless there's an extra 4 gig thats there.

seems that they should update the p2 store and make a larger one. Technically, isnt it the same technology, just with the larger cards inside (just like the p2 cards)?

I thought one member had already taken one apart and replaced the internal hard drive.

You can only copy fifteen 4gb cards due to only being able to have a maximum of 15 partitions on the drive. The P2 Store creates a new partition for each offload.

I'm not sure, I'm optimistic. That device needs an upgrade quickly.

At 60 GB, it holds 2 hours of 720p/24pN, and that's assuming you can't even use 12 GB of it because of the full-partitions-per-card issue, which may not be the case after the firmware upgrade. With two 16 GB cards, you've got another 80 minutes in your camera, or 3 hrs 20 mins, total.

Or, you've got 48 minutes of 1080 in the Store, and another 32 minutes in your camera, or 1 hr 20 mins total. Again, without even using the last 12 GB on the Store.

If the P2 Store disc size was good enough for 4 and 8 GB cards, why isn't it good enough for the 16s?

just checked on the Panasonic site and the P2 store is a 60 gig hard drive. You can fit 3 16gig cards and will have enough room left over for 3 4gig cards on the p2store. That's 150 minutes right there in 720 24pn. Then (if you have 2 16gig cards and 3 4gig cards left) you can fit another 80 minutes on the 2 16gigs and 30 minutes on the 3 4gig cards that you emptied on the p2 store. So that comes out to 4 hrs and 20 minutes of 720 24pn. as opposed to my current workflow using 4 4gig p2 cards and the p2 store which allows me a maximum of 2hrs 10minutes.
if I would upgrade to 16gig cards I would also want to upgrade the hard drive to a larger one. Are there any 240 gig 2.5 hard drives out there yet?

At NAB I pushed the Panny people for info and they had none and when I asked about a P2 Store upgrade I was told "probably not" Not sure if who I talked to was informed or not but at the current price, the P2 Store makes no sense. For $1500, I would expect 160GB and a screen to view/playback.

ash =o)

"Not worth the money"

No argument there -- but for those of us who already have one . . .
(and I'm not about to throw mine in the trash).

Here's a scenario that I'd like comments on please:

I'm thinking that the partioning and capacity of the P2 Store will allow it to hold 3x 8GB cards and 2x 16GB cards. That's 56GB total, and less than the 60GB HD size.
Because 8GB cards use two partitions, I'm assuming that 16GB cards will use 4 partitions. So adding them up, 6 partitions (3x 8GB) plus 8 partitions (2x 16GB) makes a total of 14 partitions, which is less than the P2 Store limit of 15 partitions.

Sound correct?

i wish they would make a 240 Gig version....

i do lots of event stuff lately, and i'd KILL to be able to shoot all day. And dont tellme shoot 24Pn, cause everyone wants 1080 now..... i need to hold the full bandwidth...

A laptop with 240GB of external hard disk would let you shoot all day, at less cost, and you wouldn't have to kill anyone...

And BTT, yes that should work. Two 16's, 3 8's, and a 4 should all fit.

i know! But the P2 store is SOOOOOOO convenient! i can carry it with me, and kinda shoot on the Go. like for example i shot a soccer game, and was running up and down the field. i cant have a laptop strapped around my shoulders while running around swapping cards, lol. the laptop is great if yo uhave a station. but often thats not a luxury i have. this is why i am DYING for a P2 store.
