P2 Store Portable Utility Bag...

FWIW, the P2-Store has motion sensors inside it, which pauses recording to prevent write errors and disk damage. You can hang it on your belt for transport, but for offloading, you should put it on a flat surface.

I know about the motion sensors which kick on for extreme movement but unless you are doing jumping jacks it shouldn't be a problem...

I'm sorry to say, but I used the P2 store al lot and it MUST be on a flat surface. If you even breath a lit bit too hard it will pause due to motion sensor. Even the slitest movement it is pausing, so no walking or moving during offloading.
If you could move with it I would allready have ordered your invention.

Have used the P2 store as well and have seen it pause and the like, but only with large movements.

I'm not saying go and run around in the street and expect it to off load your card but standing clipped in vertical position or even slow walks around talking to talent or even clipped to tripod is better than alternatives of "Only using a flat surface."

I can't imagine anyone wanting to put there P2 store on the floor and miss a shot because they have to bend down to offload or have to bring a table with them to their shoots or forget the idea of going run and gun with just your camera and "the store".

The P2 store seems very touchy.
Today, I may have lost several downloads of footage.
My assistant didn't understand that he needed to wait untill the footage switched to the other card, before removing the card.

He also removed the card before it was full (by pausing the camera and then removing it) not sure if that makes it only download 4 gigs instead of the full 8 gigs.

Then to make things worse, he somehow used a battery that died half way through a transfer from P2 card. This gave an error E4, which not having a manual, I did not know how or if I could recover the footage.

Unfortunately we had tape to shoot the rest of tape.
Luckily it was only a casting call, not something that we really needed.

I am attempting to recover the footage now.

When trying to download, I lifted the P2 store and simply moved it to a different area, and the motion sensors kicked in displaying a yellow e- code untill I put the device in a non-movable state.

It still seemed to be downlaoding, but the device is really sensitive to motion.
I don't think a portable handling will work reliably. I did just discover that the sensors can be disabled when transfering via usb cable, but this will void your warranty.

...and I really wanted something like that.

Interesting...

I've done what your tech did when testing the camera and it sucks, but that's what testing is for.

As far as the motion sensors, I haven't experienced the "touchiness" that you describe. I have tripped them but after very large movements.

Maybe, Justyn has had a similar experience?

everytime i see this discussion in the forum, i think of the little rubber foot that came off my brand new p2 store... it rocks like one of those cheap table at the coffee house.. now I gotta put a packet of sugar underneath it to keep it stable.. bastards. i have a feeling after a couple of months of use another one will come off... i should rip them all off right now... maybe i'll cover the bottom in velcro.. hmm..

you should come up with something to stick on the bottom of the p2 store... remember the plastic handrails and truck protectors that we used to put on our skateboards back in the day? maybe what this thing needs is something rubbery around the edges and bottom to absorb shock.. plus you can even put a hole for a caribner if you like too...

I do not own a HVX or P2-store yet. But my advice is to use the P2 store as a harddrive while offloading to it. It is portable as a carrying device. It looks like a great device, but of course it is not made to work while you move it around. That´s not its purpose. It is like a film-swapping tent: you don´t load filmcasettes while walking either, do you.

you're right but with film you don't usually film ENG or run and gun shooting. With video you also have to change you're tape. That takes only 30 seconds. P2 takes a minimum of 4 minutes (verification off) to offload. And that would be no problem when you could offload while climbing a mountain for example.
It is a great device but if i knew before you could not use it run and gun I would have considered buying it -(and that I find a little dissapointing from panasonic, the marketing strategy was that the store was roughly build, you could let it fall and won't break etc etc, but but for me the most important part of not using while run and gun was not mentioned)-. When you're in a hurry and thus under pressure because of offloading takes long and relatively small cards, then you assistant is going to make mistakes. I also had a assinstant who accidentaly formatted the card before offloading. Then you're lucky it's a 4 gb. But with 16 or 64gb you're
f...ed

Going off thread here a tad but I feel it necessary to comment. This is my opinion, so feel free to lambast me for it but working with the HVX will in my eyes be no longer a 'run & gun' scenario. You have to change your metholody in how you shoot especially if your from a video background.

I for one am really looking forward to shooting with the HVX as this will give me the time and control of a film production. I'll have the extra crew members (justifyable) on a video shoot now as I would on a film shoot. No clients squeezing you for a few hundred bucks here and there, because time is money (god I hate that saying).

When I first started in this business, I remember when Local News reports were shot on film....those were the days. I think the workflow of this new technology will benifit the users as they will have more time to think about what they are shooting and what they really do want and be a damn site more critical of what is acceptable in content, not just press a record button and hope to get a good take after using 60 minutes of tape.

Peace

Rich.. that is some good advice. The p2 lenghts and such has altered my shooting.. and made me a better judge of what I want to shoot.. and if I should shoot.... kind of like the way film makes you shoot becuause of the expence.. but here it's because of the record times.

As far as the P2store, I haven't put it through any torture test situations so far. I've done what the manual says and just offloaded on a flat surface. I have done it in a golf cart going 20mph.. without any problems.... I also now do the offloading in the case I made for it.. or my camerabag. I had it open and ready to be used the first day... like 5 minutes out of the box and I was in a field next to a racetrack and the wind picked up and a whole crapload of sand... and grass and redneck BO landed all over the p2store... Im just happy that the lid was closed and that I had some dust off spray... Dust off spray has been very handy so far...

I was interested in this solution to be able to have the P2store on my body and move around.. but I do think it'll have to be set on a surface to offload.... kind of not what Panny was suggesting about this, but what the hell.. it's still the best solution out there now. I would be interested in a way to connect it to my tripod... and I'm sure people will poo-poo that again, but I've done it before with a few things and I like having a small contained area when I shoot.

what I did last week was pretty cool as well. I bought one of those sports seats that fold up and are also a walking cane/ mobile seat and It has a seat that's perfect to place the P2store on... I bungeed the p2store and then weighted down the seat with sandbags.. and viola my portable stand for the p2store right next to me... I could do the same thing with a c-stand and a babyplate, but that's a lot bigger and heavier and used for usually the ligths and crap...

So far that's the only advantage I have seen to the other HDV cameras... they can be in volitile situations... and keep the compartment closed.. and just run and gun without this whole operation. But after reading Marcs post about shooting with the Marines, both this one and the last one he did... I'm sold that we picked the format that can handle shots and explosions.. I rembered that previously he said that the explosions caused his tape based and even film cameras to shut off or loose picture for a few seconds.. with the p2camera it just shoots and shoots like nothing happened....

I am excited about videotaping again... which is really something... And I'm stoked to be moving into an IT database approach to media organization

Good info Justyn,

Like I said previously, I am not anticipating the ability to run around with this and offlaod your P2 Cards at the same time. But attaching to a tripod, your belt or a shoulder strap it is possible to offload data into your p2 Store.

I believe that this product will provide more versatility than what Panasonic offers now which is a portable "brick" with the only solution for mobility is carrying it in hand and placing it on a table.

Justyn, also the Bag will have loops and a provided carribeener for what u suggest. Also, the control buttons and display on top will be protectected under a clear window allowing operation and protection as well. Should help with some of the dust.

Hey guys,

What about a "Wallet" that is felt-lined to store your P2 Cards in. I have 5 4GB cards and I hate the plastic enclosures they have. The 5 Cards take up way more space than they need to.

If you're like me you walk around on your shoot with a battery in your pocket, back up tape as well, wrench, Gaff Tape...

I think it would be nice to have a quad-folding wallet that had space for up to four cards inside. Could fit easily in your pocket and empty slots could maybe hold business cards... Much easier than 4 of those plastic things.

What do you guys think?

Bad luck then! I hear the same from dolph2000 he was one of the first that used the P2 store and is a ENG filmer who needs run and gun shooting. A small 11" laptop with pcmcia slot looks like a better solution, read the script view the clips and offload. But do you need to hold them on a flat surface too? Some have motion detectors.

Hey this is cool...someone (who has the privilege to be a moderator) changed my Sig! Look at the funny misspelling thing. Childish I think.

Anyone see a need for this or maybe should I include it with the P2 Bag?

Kinda like a --"But that's not all!..."

I like the wallet idea. Better hurry up, because I'm sure case logic or someother big company is ready to roll out with something like that.

We are making the first prototypes now and will be taking orders through Jarred and DVXUser soon.

Thanks for the interest...
