P2 store like device?

Anyone know of any device that exist that can meet the following:

1 - Stand alone off load device similar to the P2Store - (sick of having to carry a laptop around and also needing an assistant to dump footage. I would like to have something that I can have on my side and just dump cards to while still shooting)

2 - Raid 1 mirror drive set-up - that way I can dump to the drives and have a mirrored copy

3 - Hot swappable with 1TB capacity capability

4 - Use industry standard drives

5 - error code checking/transfer checks

6 - No limit on the number of P2 card transfer (P2Store limiting to 15 or 16 transfers)

7 - firewire/USB/e-sata connections to connect to a PC for transfer and editing later.

I was hoping Spec-Comm would morph the Cineporter into such a device but that doesn't seem to be the case. Anyone know of anything like this or anyone working on something like this?

Thanks for the info Barry but the P2 Gear is out of my price range and with the addition of the external harddrive would be very bulky to carry around. Would the same as a laptop.

I take it there is nothing else as a single stand-alone unit.

uh, yeah. and id like a v12 italian sports car that does 0 to 60 in 4 sec and gets 30 mpg and cost around $20k and comes with a half-off coupon...???..?

HA! i cant imagine something like what you describe being too far out of reality to develop - BUT, the whole p2/pcmcia thing has a forseable life span that probably wouldnt outlast the R&D costs (kinda what happened with the cineporter). and the situation is that folks who really NEED what you describe can just as easily just hire an assistant to do the work. and those who cant, couldnt afford either option anyway.

Unfortunately you have to put the cam into MCR mode to transfer which would mean you can't keep shooting.

Reason why I was looking for something like this is I am going out to film a hunting show in the next week and only have 2 8GB P2 cards. I don't want to carry a laptop and have to stop and offload as they are moving but it looks like I will have to do that.

The Firestore is probably my best solution right now but I don't have one and never really considered it until I got this job. Also, personally I feel its a stop gap solution that is limited by the fact that you can't use industry standard drives and make it hotswappable. Once the larger P2 solutions come on the market it will be obsolete, whereas a stand-alone offload unit that allows hotswappable drives will be still be viable.

Rent a couple of 32GB cards (if they're out yet) and maybe you can get through the entire shoot day without offloading anything?

Otherwise, the P2 Store is exactly what you should be using for a scenario like this.

I may have to rent some cards as its probably me best bet on such short notice. Though i would really love to see a larger P2 Store (60gb is just not enough) with raid 1 and industry standard drive capabilites. Would make single crew long form shooting much easier.

In any case, thanks again Barry.

There won't likely be a larger P2 Store; that's what the P2 Gear is supposed to accomplish. Interchangeable hard disks, bus-powered, and you could use a RAID 1 if you want. Just not built-in, they'd have to be external.

Am I the only one who thinks the now dead Cineporter could easily have been translated into a larger and relatively affordable p2 store? They have the technology already. A 300 gig p2 store? 'be sweet, wouldn't it? Heck, even a 160gig one. That's why I thought cineporter still had value as a product. All it needed was a slight shift in marketing and probably in functionality. Something that can be used to offload cards and/or record live to... What's not to like?

Or, just strip it down and make it a large p2 store type device...

Later,
Jason

I thought the same exact thing and said so at the time. They put so much R&D into that product. It would be a shame just to let it slip.
