NAB2006 audio products video

Evil has Ears
For those of you that don't visit RAMPS you might want to check out the NAB video posted at http://coffeysound.com/ Couple of interesting products this year. The Bluetooth wireless mic and a bargin zeppelin from K-Tek were both pretty interesting and worth checking out.

(for audio geeks this is better then the type of video usually downloaded off the internet)

That new recorder from Zaxcom was very interesting. Not presented well by their booth person, but certainly has caught my attention. The only question is when will they really be available. Zaxcom seems to pre-announce their products by quite a bit (i.e. the products that they announced at the 2005 NAB are still not generally available.) With the jammable TC on that recorder, it could make a very low cost back up recorder alternative.

I actually worked the Zaxcom booth, and those things are darn near close to being out. They were pretty much fully functional at the show.

Remember about six months ago and I posted the thread about Bluetooth for wireless microphones?

I should have patented that idea... Ktek = theives :)

I want to check that out.

Jeremy,

It wasn't K-tek that stole your idea. It was some Australian company. Manfred is a good guy...he wouldn't steal your great idea!

So Dave, since you got some hands-on time with the new recorder, what are your thoughts? Good for a back up, primary, stick a lav on it and eliminate the need for an Rx? ;-)

Thanks!

all of the above.

OH...and since the bluetooth thing was mentioned...

It's not straight up bluetooth. It's a derivative of it, and they've been working on it for over a year, so they didn't steal your idea. I know those guys personally.

You do know that I wasn't being serious about them stealing my idea, right? I just thought it was cool that something we bs'd about is now happening, just like we discussed in that thread.

I've got nothing against Ktek, in fact, I have a bunch of their stuff and really like it. I'm excited about this because I think that BlueTooth will ultimately lead to smaller and cheaper solutions for wireless audio.

I wasn't being serious about them stealing... did the :) go unnoticed?

Like the little wink went unnoticed in my post. (I don't do the fancy shmancy bandwidth hogging smilies....) ;-)

Dave, what kind of input is on the recorder? (BTW, if you have any contact with the folks at Zaxcom, you might drop the hint that their Web site is somewhat lacking when it comes to detailed product information... ;-)

Thanks!

I know the folks at Zaxcom very well, and still talk to them a bunch. Their sales manager is in charge of the website, and she's been so busy lately with Deva stuff she hasn't gotten around to really nailing stuff down on their website.

As far as the little recorder goes....I actually had a long talk with Glenn (the president of Zaxcom) about that. Right now, the unit is not in it's final stage. Their original idea was for the mono version to be mic or line input, using the 3 pin lemo. The stereo version would be line input only for the second input, using some sort of adapter to be determined. I felt that if it were going to be a stereo recorder, it should have two mic inputs on it. I can think of several sound effects recording applications where that thing would be invaluable (getting motorocycles, for exaple). So, it's still a work in progress. I think I convinced him to go with two mic inputs, but we'll see what they do.

Just so you guys know, the bluetooth thing is going to be around $1500, if I remember correctly. Kinda spendy. I don't know why it's so much, but that's what I was told. We'll see what the street price is once it comes out.
