I'm using an R series 16 gig p2 card. At 1080i 24fps I'm getting 17 min. of footage. I'm getting the same for 720. Why don't I have more record time at lower res? Sorry if I'm missing something silly but I'm confused... what am I missing?
1080i (recording) I always records at the full 100mbps data rate, regardess of what format you are shooting (60i, 30p or 24p) by repeating fields if necessary.
720p (recording) always records at the full 100mbps data rate, regardless of what format you are shooting (60p, 30p, 24p, any frame rate) by repeating frames if necessary.
720pN (recording) only records the active frames, this is the one you want to use. 720/60pN is still of course the full 100mbps, but 720/30pN is only about 50mbps, and 720/24pN is even less.
Do note that only the full data-rate formats (not 720pN) can be streamed over Firewire to another recording device like a FireStore, computer, or deck.
They did 1080pN in AVC-Intra and AVCHD. They can't really do pN in 1080 DVCPRO-HD because the DVCPRO-HD 1080 codec doesn't provide for pure progressive encoding; it always encodes as embedded in a 60i data stream.
