P2 questions: FCP4? External drive?

Hi guys -

I'm new to the HVX. Did some editing, brought the P2 cards directly into Final Cut 5 and so it worked fine. I'm now possibly working on a different production that isn't as straightforward. So I have some questions.

1) Can you use FCP4.5 with P2? Is it as straightforward in FCP5, with the P2 import option? If not, how do I use P2 in FCP4.5?

2) Can I digitize the P2 footage using FCP5 and then edit those files on FCP4.5?

3) If I offload the contents of the P2 card onto a WINDOWS formatted drive, when I bring that into OS X, will it still import the contents fine into FCP?

Question 1:No way, no how. Gotta have 5.0.4 or later. Unless you ingest on one station with a proper FCP version then just carry media over. But that's untested.

Question 2: Maybe, I haven't tested that, don't count on it until it works

Question 3: there's that locked file that has to come along for the ride - somebody else remind me what it's called

Unasked question 4, asked with humor: are you TRYING to make this hard on yourself? Get the gear you need, don't keep introducing additional variables. In a production workflow chain, all it takes is one broken link to bring the whole thing to a standstill.
 
Trust me, I know this. :) On this project, I'm more of an editing assistant than anything else to a group who doesn't really want to upgrade. I don't hold a lot of weight in this debate, but at the same time I'm the only one of the group who have shot on the HVX before. So I have a little bit of leverage now, I suppose.

I believe that hidden file is called lastclip.txt. We had issues with that last time. I never did actually end up finding that file (even when showing hidden files) but somehow I was able to ingest the clips either way.

1. You need FCP 5.0.4 and QT 7.0.3 to import footage from this camera. No way around that.

2. Can you edit that footage with FCP 4.5? Dunno. Haven't tried. But in general previous versions of FCP have always had trouble with footage captured with later versions...and since the P2 format is VERY new, I think you might have issues. Do yourself a favor and upgrade while it is cheap.

3. Yes.
