P2 question? I have one 16gb card...

Should I buy more 16gb cards or buy one more 32gb p2 card? Do p2 cards work better evenly paired or doesn't matter?

thank you,
Mark

Depends on your workflow. How often can you dump them? How much time can you take to dump them, does someone dump them for you?

Shooting in studio environment setting... My Mac Pro is close by.... Have a HPX170 which comes with a 16gb P2. Just trying to figure out if I should buy two more 16gb P2 cards or just one 32gb card? Not sure if the HPX170 minds being paired with a 16 and 32gb cards in the bay... Thanks for your help.

I would go for the 16s simply because two of them are cheaper than a 32, especially if you can locate some used 16s. I recently bought a used 16Gb from a DVXUser, it looked basically brand new and was only $650.00. New 32s are going for $1,500.00 and there do not seem to be very many used 32s on the market.

i second that. there is another advantage to having smaller cards. it forces you to dump more often. while the p2 format is proven and has never let me down, if a card were to fail or it's data get corrupted somehow, i would rather lose 16gb than 32gb. you know, don't put all your eggs in one basket, etc.

Yet, there's something to be said for having a bigger card if you can store an entire days' shooting without offloading. Plus, no spanned clip worries (though it's not as much of an issue if you offload with proper software).

Different strokes. There's no one right way.

i have 3 16gig cards now and i like the workflow. shoot to one, transfer another and one on deck in a pinch. the only drawback to several smaller cards is if you need to shoot longer form material. you only have two slots and the bigger the card the better - the more large cards you have in your camera, the longer you can shoot.

and no, ive never heard of any problems shooting (spanned) to various sized cards...

With only 2 cards, I would definitely want them to be the same size.

Now I definitely sway toward the paranoid side of things, but I'd be worried that I would fill up the 16gb card before I had time to dump the 32gb card and swap it back in.

But I'm really a Firestore man anyways, so don't listen to me.

yeah, thats the main logic to using matched sized cards. cards generally take slightly less time to dump than they do to fill up. and thats if you roll continuously. add starts and stops and your transfer is done WAY before your other card is full...

then scratch that - i stand corrected. avoid complications where you can and use matched size cards ; )
