P2 Process

Back in the day when I used two 16 GB P2 cards, ingesting data was simple.
On location, I dragged the contents onto my old Gateway laptop with the PCMCIA slot.
Back in the edit suite I dragged the files onto a hard drive on my editing machine, and Bob's your uncle.
Never a hitch, never a missing file, never a corrupted file.
Then I invested 26 hundred bucks and purchased two 64 GB P2 cards.
Most times I didn't need to offload on site.
But I used the same process, drag from the laptop to the edit machine HDD.
Then the trouble started and the file folders began looking like a library with the files all over the floor!
Undaunted I purchased what I thought would be the cure all, a $419.00 card reader.
Now I'm backlogged with two long format jobs that would be edited now were it not for the irritating game of "find the clip".
Even when shooting (with my HPX170) non stop, there are haphazard stops.
And with file scattered all over the place, it is taking be a long time to patch everything together.
In the tape days both of these projects would be cut and delivered by now.
I don't want to go back to tape, but I need to know a process that works.
Have been using P2 CMS which assured me all clips were captured, and now I'm finding out otherwise, at least one file with no video!
Tried a demo of Shotput and I'm not sure it was any better.
Where do I go to get help in adopting a workflow that,----well,----works?:violin::dankk2:

You should offload using P2 Viewer. P2 Viewer will stitch long takes which are split into individual clips, tell you which clips are split, and allow you to organize your clips as you offload, however you like.

Playing with P2 Viewer and beginning to see the possibilities.
"Do I ingest" using Viewer without tapping into P2 CMS?
Do these programs function separately based on need and how do they differ functionally?
Sorry for all the ???
Actually, this is fun, and logging this way will save some editing time.

In Windows, you don't need P2CMS installed at all. For transferring cards, I'd forget it altogether.

What you're doing in P2 Viewer is creating virtual cards on your hard drive, organizing them however you like, then dragging clips from the P2 card to the virtual card. The virtual card can be any size and the 4GB file size limit doesn't apply. You can pick and choose whatever files you like for transfer, or take them all.

Thanks for generously sharing your knowledge.
My edit suite wall has been suffering from constant head banging.
That's stopped now and I feel better.

I'm hearing from a few sources that the P2 Viewer manual downloads with the software.
Not there that I can see.
Looking to sort out a shoot chronologically using time code, and Viewer may be the ticket.
