Well, the P2 has been out for well over a year now, if not longer. One of the big arguments against the P2 has been "You don't know that you have the footage. Tape is King!” (actually film is king, but I’m not going there)
I want to know if you got the footage or did the p2 cause you to loose footage? I want to exclude operator error in this poll so please answer as accurately as you can.

If anyone has lost 50% of their footage (or anything approaching that) regardless of how much they've used the P2 technology, I doubt he/she would still be around to vote in this poll.

I think the percentages in the pool are way too high -- I would maybe have included 1%, 5%, and on the extreme end, 10%.

If anyone votes and reports a loss of footage, it would be nice if that person could provide a brief description of what happened and what the probable cause was. It seems workflow and an intial lack of awareness of how to offload P2 card contents is a problem.

I would be interested in seeing the results if the question were simply,
"Have you ever lost p2 footage"?
(loss being defined as unusable or unviewable rather than a dropout on two frames)"
I doubt anyone has lost 50% of their footage or even close.

The purpose lf the pole is to try and understand if people are looseing footage because of this Brand New Technology or not. My persentages may be off but coming from only useing the P2 cards about 3 times my-self I dont know this answer.
What I want is information from people who have used the P2 cards for at least 40 hours. If someone used p2 for less than 40hrs then I dont think the data is valid.
Maby i should have used 1% 5% 10%. My bad.

This thread serves no useful purpose really. Jason said it best in a recent thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.p...6&postcount=54
(although that was cost related)
I read Jasons post over a couple of times, and I don't see the conection between this poll and his venting. If anything, Jason states that it's "in his opinion". I'm not stating an opnion here, I don't want an opnion, I'm asking EXPERANCED users what experance they have had with P2.

If anything I agree with Jason. If people don't like the price then go out and make your own P2 cards. Then try and market it in a world where no one has ever used such a thing before. See how long it takes you to get a return on your investment. People who complain about price know little about ecconomics, or they are just whiners. I hope Panny makes a great product and earns a huge proffit, so they will invest in their R&D department again and make the next thing. So you think they would have made the HVX if the DVX or 24p was a huge flop. o damn I'm venting, and spewing opnions.:violent5:

BTW, and just for reference, P2 was introduced in 2004. It's new, not sure I'd call it "brand new technology" though.
If someone shoots 2000 hours of footage with P2 cards, and has one "lost" clip, they are in the "lost less than 10% of my footage" category. See how that is not right?

Two weeks ago I was filming the inside of this mine when the P2 card that I shot half of the footage on said it was an un-readable card. I couldn't do anything with the card and had to reformat it and lose the footage that was on it. Then when I tested it out and played back the footage in the camera I was getting dropouts at the first couple seconds of some of the clips...on that card. I have since took both the cards into the Panasonic repair location by my house that Jan told me about. The only thing the guys there did was update the cards because they couldn't find anything wrong with them. I hope that update is all the cards needed. I'm on a Mac so I can't do the update myself.

how come theres no option for shot 20 hours and no dropout
or 40 hours or less and no dropout?

This poll is completely biased and flawed because it only gives 1 option for no dropout

That would be for another poll. This poll has to do with P2 cards only.

Except fot the fact that 99.99% of the P2 problems have been the result of a Mac reading a P2 card and not the card itself.

Not intrested.
You may start your own poll if you like.

Can I see your poll results on that percentage?
It sounds like a Mac problem and not a P2 problem. What persentage of windows systems with P2 problems can't read the card? If that # is high to then maby its the card and not the computers causing the problems.

Ultimatly, I want to know if their are problems with the P2 cards or not.

Another element might have been Editing on MAC or PC.
Yes, that would have been very interesting..i think its hard in generel to make a poll up on this, i guess it needs more to answer the question who the workflow goes...and MAC/PC is the most important question here...!

Are you talking about 8 GB cards?
When did you buy them?

I just remeber that i heard about problems with the 8 GB cards and the old firmware earlyer...but i never used them without the new update..so no similar experience here..!

Dont want to be offensive on this, but it has definitly to do with the poll, if you say you are intersted in finding out if the P2 technology is working or not, its very interesting to know, and not really differentfrom your poll.

Try to search the other threads on the "glitch"-topic and Mac and you will find how important this is..!

Do you have your own experience with P2 or are you just planning to get it?

If you search the DVXuser forum for "GLITCH"

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/search.php?searchid=744198

EVERY SINGLE POST REFERRING TO GLITCH IS ABOUT MAC AND FCP AND THERE IS NOT A SINGLE GLITCH POST WHERE THE USER IS ON A PC.

I stand corrected: it is not 99.99% of the time a mac problem is it seems to be 100% of the time a mac problem

Yep. People don't have this problem on a pc. It's something to do with the mac. The consensus seems to be that it's not an fcp deal, but something with the mac in general, or more specifically the mac os.

As stated, your poll isn't going to provide you with the information you seek, because your percentages are too high.

I'm not gonna say that p2 is bulletproof. Of course, it isn't. Nothing is. But, p2 itself is on the whole, so dang reliable, that there's just not much useful datum that can be gained from the numbers in your poll.

It's just difficult. There are a lot of variables in there. Platform being one that has been covered numerous times. Human error being another.

I think the main "fault" with p2, in terms of potential loss in footage, isn't with the card itself. It is in the fact that right now footage has to be transferred to a less reliable place lik a HDD. With current card sizes people usually have to wipe their cards and record over them.

But, when cards get larger, and more reliable storage/archival options become available and begin to catch up to the future of a tapeless workflow, this problem will go away. Barry said it great once, as well. Imagine when we have 128 gig cards, for example. You can shoot a feature length film with a 6:1 shooting ratio, on just those two cards. Never have to swap, transfer, delete, or any of that. Just pop the card in your computer, and start editing away.

Anyways, to summarize, any loss of footage that has occured, has probably been lost after transfer from the p2 card. Or in the case of a mac, during transfer. Or in other cases, just plain ole human error. I would wager that 99.9 percent of all p2 card "failures"... instances where people actually lost footage, were one of these three situations.

My 2 cents.

Jason

Apparently this Poll is full of holes. So, to try and get my information, in a scientific way, what Questions should be asked in a Poll?

Now, what is % of loss of footage (loss of footage being defined as "unrecoverable data, in any way, from the P2 card before being deleted by the user") on P2 cards.

The answer to this question is what I'm after. If I ask one person they give opinions so I thought I would do a poll.

The questions will be a group effort, based on the Question above. so post your questions below and we will start a proper poll.

Thank You in advance.

I think I'm miss understanding what some people are saying about the poll. Below is what I have interpreted from some of you. Is this correct?

P2 card+MAC=loss of footage
the same P2 card pulled from the Jaws of the MAC and inserted in to a PC
P2 card+PC=no loss of footage

Would it be correct to say?
The loss of the footage on the MAC the fault of the P2 card. The loss of the footage from the MAC indicate a bad card. In 100% of all glitches found with the P2 card (it would be on a mac some would say) it is the fault of the P2 card.

Is this what you are saying?
