NOTE: This is without a P2 card

HVX in P2 mode

Connect to OL

Hit record in OL

OL says file is avi

open in Vegas and Vegas says its a raylight file + raylight puts text over image

is there a way to capture MXF (or something else) and use raylight only if and when I want to??

Not in applications that don't already support MXF. I'd suggest grabbing Raylight, especially on Vegas with a PC it's kind of a must.

right but aren't I supposed to be able to bring in a mxf file to hard disk without it begin 'grabbed" and designated as avi?

It shows as avi upon capture in OL and on disk even outside of Vegas

as well...i bought the hvx bootcamp dvds and Barry talks so fast in this one part I can understand what hes saying!

he says something about "you can also edit right away in Vegas provided you installed the serous magic blah blah blah encoder "

is that encoder installed in with OL?

if what he says is correct why do you need raylight?

When recording DVCPRO HD in OnLocation, your format options are AVI and QuickTime. We have a feature request entered for recording to the MXF format.
Barry was referring to the Serious Magic DVCPRO Decoder, which installed with OnLocation CS3. In CS4, those decoder capabilities were effectively folded into Premiere and other suite apps, so we removed the standalone decoder from the installer.
I have no clue why Vegas is seeing the clips as Raylight files.

I assume Vegas is seeing them as raylight because I have the demo installed. If I don't want to use raylight, hopefully an uninstall is easy. If anyone knows, it would help.

@OnLoMark : So given that the decoder was "folded" into Premiere, One would then use Premiere to offload mxf?

I'm woefully unfamiliar with Premiere, and I'm not sure what you mean by "offload mfx." But here's what I can say with some degree of certainty:
1) Premiere can read both MXF clips off of the P2 card and DVCPRO HD clips in the .avi and .mov format from OnLo.
2) Premiere can output to the MXF format, complete with the whole folder structure (even if no assets in the project are in the MXF format).
