P2 on G4 1.25 vs G5

I have read on here that it is ill advised to translate the MXF on a G4. Is this true? is there some type of compression or reduction in quailty if your using a G4? I am hesitant about upgrading to a G5 because of the costs.

I am very curious about this as well. I am getting either the HD100 or the HVX200 and if I can't bring the files into my G4 without quality loss, then that is a major problem.

I do not believe this to be true. I have imported HVX footage from P2 card into Powerbook G4 (via Final Cut Pro 5.0.4) and footage looked great.

That G4 thing was some kind of urban legend that we tried to kabosh on another board for which I work.

A G4 has a PCMCIA card slot. G5 does not. The PCMCIA slot is faster... a lot faster. My experience has been twice as fast on a G4 laptop. That's the only difference.

The first time I heard of the "G4=lesser quality import from P2" thing was at Moviola, from the lecturer, Michael Cioni of Plastercity Post. He was quite adamant about NOT using a G4 to ingest into FCP. I have not tested it myself, but Mr. Cioni manages an FCP-only Post house, which has worked with P2 material quite a bit. I took it seriously coming from him.

Hmmmmmm.

I doubt the quailty would go down, as long as the settings were where you set them at. Transfering it to a G4 or G5 should not effect quailty as much as rate of transfer. But i guess viewing the footage from a new g5 screen with better pixals might effect it more than viewing it from a 1st gen g4 laptop? I cant think of any other reason.

This seems odd to me for some reason. I would hope it would not matter since the best part of the PBG4 is the PCMIA slot.
