P2 Offloading procedure for Mac FCP 6?

Just got the HPX170 this week - and it's my first time using P2.
I followed Barry's instructions in the sticky to download Panasonic's P2CMS software for offloading the footage.

I noticed that when I launched Final Cut Pro 6, I had the option to log and transfer the footage from the P2 card, which would essentially allow me to bypass offloading the footage to the P2CMS application first and then transfer to FCP.

So my question is..... do I still need P2CMS for offloading and storing footage? For example, right now, I just want to offload my footage and store it for future use. Is log and transfer in FCP 6 a practical method for archiving the footage?

Not really but it's helpful for organization. It really comes down to how important your workflow is with metadata. If you don't care about metadata too much- just go right into FCP.

As Noah said, it depends on whether metadata is important to you. I don't have any P2 software installed on my Mac Pro. I dump cards to hdd via firewire from the camera, or more often, using duel adaptor with my windows laptop. This is my archive of raw P2 data.

FCP L&T works when you are ready to edit.

A typical workflow starts with copying your P2 cards to an internal or external harddrive. This backs up your footage and lets you reuse the P2 cards. Then you can use P2CMS to adjust the metadata to help with organizing your clips. After that you can use FCP's log and transfer to capture or a program like DVFilm Raylight for Mac to bypass L&T and immediately begin editing as well as label your clips with metadata. There is a video tutorial of a workflow at the link.

Best,
Andy

Thanks Noah. I haven't really worked with metadata yet, though I probably will as I learn more about the advantages.
In the meantime, is the P2 FCP Workflow Training DVD still available? I noticed the title is HVX200 P2 FCP Workflow Training.... I have an HPX170. Will that make a difference in the training materials?
