P2 offload -- crazy slow (7 plus hours for 64 gigs)

hi all,

i'm offloading one of my first P2 cards...it's 64 gigs (not sure exactly how much footage is shot on this card, but definitely not enough to fill up all 64 gigs). and it's been over 7 hours since i began offloading, and counting.

going directly from camera to 2 OWC drives via macbook (os 10.4.1.1), using shotput pro.

does anybody know what's going on? i've read that it should be a gig/minute. so it seems like something is up.

thanks for any advice.

Sounds like you're probably connected through USB1.1.

You should be able to get about 2gb/minute when offloading directly to a single hard drive.

hey barry,

thanks for the reply...yeah, i think you're right--

i'm going from camera to computer (firewire 400) and then computer to external hardrives (usb ports).

so, when you say going directly to a single hard drive, does that mean i completely bypass computer? if so, how exactly does the offload work?

i was using shotput to offload...

thanks again for all your help.

I mean that if you're transferring to a RAID you can get faster than 2g/min transfer times, but when transferring to a single hard drive then the maximum transfer speed is usually 2g/min.

You can offload directly to a firewire drive, bypassing the computer. If your drive is a firewire drive and it has its own power supply, that workflow works okay too.
