P2 offload causing computer crash

When I use P2CMS/P2Genie/HDLog to offload my P2 cards (16's and 32's) my MacBookPro goes into a dark gray screen mode and says I need to restart my computer.

I'm sure this is the result of my foolish decision to "upgrade" to Leopard, but I can't find how to fix it. If you can direct me/suggest advice I'd appreciate it very much.

Thanks guys, yeah I'm using a Duel Adapter. I learned pretty quickly that the adapter required the computer to restart after "ejecting" the P2 card in order to recognize the card/combo. This isn't the same problem unfortunately...

Workflow

1) Start computer, wait until the laptop is running full speed.
2) Plug in Duel Adapter, wait 10 seconds.
3) Plug P2 card into adapter.
4) Open (fill in the blank offload software) and start offloading.
5) About 2 minutes in, using any of the aforementioned software, the screen goes gray and I'm forced to shutdown/restart.
6) Crack open a beer.
7) Same as step 1.

We are having the same problem! It will not work properly, it's all well and good for these great instructions to be posted about locking the card and always using Panasonic's ULTRA crappy software, but it doesn't work whatsoever. It crashes the computer every single time. We finally decided to lock the card, COPY the footage, and paste it to a folder on the computer. I have no idea if that's better than drag-and-drop, but if the card is locked and you're just copying the footage I don't see any technological way it can screw up the footage on the card when it's locked. That wouldn't make sense...

In any case I'm super paranoid, my editor is not, I told him we need to find a better way than that. I think they make a $200 program for P2 offloading that's much better than this POS that Panasonic has that crashes the entire computer.

These are, by the way, state-of-the-art MacBook Pros fully loaded. One was fully loaded last summer, it's a 2.4ghz with 160 gig hard drive, so by this point it's not the absolute top of the line, but the other is 2.6Ghz with 200 gig hard drive and it is top of the line. It's the one we use and it thinks Panasonic's program can basically screw itself because it doesn't work at all.

For reference it should be noted that it's likely this problem is 100% widespread with anyone using this workflow because we do the exact same thing that the OP does, DuelAdapter, Leopard, MacBook Pro, same crash sequence. Very flawed software.

I was just copy to the desktop.

The DA isn't a perfect solution, so I usually take what it gives me by copying and the ingesting.

Jonathan, can you post all your version numbers? MacOS, QT version, DA drivers, firmware, etc.? I think we can solve this issue with the process of elimination.

However my girlfriend has the same exact Penryn MBP (with the exception that she has the stock 2gb RAM and i have 4gb third-party ram) and her MBP offloads P2 cards through D-A and P2CMS with no issues, while mine causes kernel panics each and every time

Same problem here....I've tried both P2 Genie and HD Log Gold...they both crash. In the past, I have always created a "reel" folder on my RAID and would drag and drop the contents and last clip text from the card.....no issues. I attended the HD Expo in Vegas and Suny the instructor said to NOT do that. He says programs like Genie and Log do a "checksum" backup where drag and drop don't write files in a sequence and you could lose clips or parts of clips.

I have never lost anything, but am trying to do things the right way. Please let me know if you've found a solution.

ps...I have also spoken to the tech who writes the code for HD Log...he was going to look into it and see if it was an issue with Duel. I'll keep you posted.

This has happened to me, turned out if I put the P2 card back in the camera there was a problem with one clip on the card.

Run repair clip (on the problem clip), and then try to dump the card into your Mac.

I spoke to the folks at both Duel and HD Log. Duel says they dont think it is an adapter issue since the card works fine with OSX 10.5 without using one of the P2 offload programs. HD Log people say they are aware of the issue and are about to release a new update to deal with some of the issues of 10.5. Keep your fingers crossed!
