They are going to do what they can to prevent this from happening to films. I'm not saying they won't blow it royally, because they will. But this is their thinking. Releasing films ppv via the net scares the living sh*t out of them because these can be easily copied.
Virum is right, the music industry is entirely different then the music industry. You listen to songs over and over again. Most movies you watch once or twice and buy (for a pretty fair price) if you really enjoy it. With a NetFlix account you can watch just about any movie you want for next to nothing ($17 a month...that's less then one music CD by their old price standards).
While not condoning piracy, the music industry really got what they deserved with their price gouging. Additional, when was the last time you heard an album that had more then one or two good songs (ok a few but not many). This $.99 a song is absolutely brilliant. Release an album with 12 good songs and they are back to making the same profit per album (with no wholesale/retail or hardware costs the profits would be even higher).
The movie industry has burned itself with the high theatrical prices but you can't pirate the theatre experience. I am down to about 8 movies in the theatre a year. A night at the movies is almost as much as going to a play now.
Now if they try charging $40 or so for a blu-ray movie disc, they might start seeing some people resort to a Napster type revolution.
Guess this getting a little off topic
