p2 ingest advice

I use P2CMS to ingest my footage per Barry's sticky on this forum. That footage goes directly to a 1TB drive that I use for backup only.

Then I go into FCP and "Log and transfer" the footage. Log and transfer reads the file info from my cards and creates the files onto a dedicated media drive on my system.

My question is: why do I have to go through the P2CMS step if I can just copy the "Log and Transfer" files to my backup drive?

Because otherwise you don't keep a copy of the original MXF camera footage. You just get the QuickTime cross convert- which is fine for editing but not so good for archiving or working with other editing systems. We recommend backing it all up.
