P2 in iMovie

I think I read that iMovie does not support P2. Is this still the case? If so, what's the easiest way to convert to something it will accept. Best workflow?

Any suggestions would help. Gotta shoot at 1.

Thanks

If you used Raylight, you could probably do SD DV in iMovie. But if you want to edit P2HD on a Mac, you have to have Premiere Pro CS3 or FCP or Avid.

I have a client that uses iMovie but we shoot 720/30p footage for them. I import the files into my FCP system and pass along the Quicktime files that result from importing. If you know someone with FCP this is one possible solution.

I figured. The minute the guy said he had iMovie HD, I got online and started googling. Oh well, we'll figure out something. I can shoot on tape and capture into iMovie, right?

But those files won't work in iMovie, because the codec isn't installed in iMovie. Those files will only work if the person you're sending the files to has also got FCP installed. If you have FCP installed, then you have the appropriate codec, and then the files will work in iMovie too. If you don't have FCP installed, you don't have the codec, and the files won't work (they'll show up with audio but the video will be nothing but a white screen).

You cannot shot DVCProHD to tape, however.

And using DVCProHD footage requires the DVCProHD codecs to be installed. If they aren't, the client can see the video

I have a client who wants to edit herself.
She has Imovie but NOT FCP.
She said that she only needs the files converted from MXF to Quicktime movie DV HD and she will be able to edit. She says the guys at the macstore told her that.

I have Vegas8 with raylight. The files are 720PN.
Do you think I can export as quicktime 7 and it will work for her?

Thanks.

Some people at Mac stores are idiots when it comes to video editing. What the heck is "DV HD?" There is HDV, but that is not what the HVX shoots, it shoots DVCPRO HD. i Movie does work with HDV...but not DVCPRO HD. You might have luck converting DVCPRO HD to HDV, via Compresor, or maybe if you media manage it in FCP (RECOMPRESS). But who knows what the quality will be like.

iMovie will not edit DVCPRO HD, and any sort of conversion will be tricky and most likely won't look good....unless you use Media Manager or Compressor to convert to DV.

Actually Shane, I have imported DVCProHD footage into iMovie 08.

But you cannot work in progressive, nor can you work in 1280x720.

and you need to have the codecs installed.

But where do you GET those codecs? By installing FCP...or getting them from someone who has FCP.

So it only works in 1080i eh? Makes a litle sense.

Yeah I had never heard of the Quicktime Movie HD DV craziness either.
I told my client that Macstore people are not editing experts and that Imovie would not work. I told her to get FCP or a person who has FCP to edit it for her.
She is adamant that she can do it in Imovie. I am inclined to convert to quicktime and let her try, but she is fast exceding the day rate she paid me, LOL.

Video and Audio with IMovie and MXF Videos

Video and Audio with IMovie and MXF Videos

Hi all

First time here. I have just transfered videos from P2 cards onto my Imac.

I bought a second hand Imac on which there is a FCP, but I dont have the code (yet) to use it.

So I am trying to work with IMovie for now.

I can import the videos in Imovie, but I dont know if its possible to have the audio files play with the respective video files.

Anyone here ?

thanks in advance

Just use your original FCP install discs and install FCP on the iMac that you have.

Then import using log and transfer

Well, unfortunately, the guy who I bought the Imac from has FCP on there, but not the Key. So I guess, I can use the codec in IMovie.

I do want to use FCP, but until I find a way to have one functional, I hope I can use Imovie.

If you don't have the original discs and the serial number and a license transfer, then you've violated to the EULA for FCS.

Don't shoot the messenger.
