P2 import error help

I've got an HVX200, and I've shot 16 minutes of spanned 720p footage onto a P2 card. I'm trying to log and transfer it into final cut 6.0, but it's not working. The progress bar loads all the way, but then the little "Error: Unknown" icon appears. I renamed it at first, but then reverted it to the original metadata, and that didn't work. I've unchecked the Remove Advanced Pulldown box, and that didn't fix it. Is there anything I've missed? I've also restarted my computer (a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.5.6) and that didn't work.

This camera is my friend's, and I'm considering buying it for my business. Should this problem concern me? Should I look for another camera?

The camera works fine, it's FCP's "Log & Transfer" that's causing the problem. If you can play that footage back in the camera then you know it's not an issue.

Download the trial version of Raylight and see if it lets you automatically import the file directly to the timeline. I always recommend Raylight or Calibrated's MXF importer to any FCP user, it lets you totally avoid the Log & Transfer step and the frustrations that users occasionally report about it.

Yeah, I can play the footage back. It doesn't seem like it's corrupted or anything.

The trials of Raylight and Calibrated's MXF importer can only work with footage under 10 seconds and 30 seconds, respectively. I've tried shooting other things about 15 seconds long, and they work, it's just this particular clip. Would capturing it on another computer possibly work? Also, you should probably know that I'm capturing from the camera connected by firewire to an external HD, which is firewired to my laptop. I'm about to go out and get a USB cable and see if that works.

Maybe. Hopefully an FCP expert will weigh in with some more ideas of how to make Log & Transfer work. I refuse to use it, I just use Raylight instead, so I don't have too many suggestions on other things to try with the stock program.

I use L&T in FCP without any problem, but I always transfer files from the camera to a HDD first. I either use firewire direct from the camera to the Mac Pro, or I dump cards via Duel adaptor to my laptop in the field, then later copy over to the Mac. So, you might try L&T from the files on a HDD.

You may have a chained firewire issue, but I don't know what to tell you otherwise. I do know that the FX Factory plugins interfere with P2 L&T, but if you can see the clips in the L&T bin that is probably not your issue.

You might also scour the FCP forum for ideas.

Okay, update:

I tried the USB cable to no avail. Then I tried copying the footage to an external hard drive and L&Ting it from there. The clips were no longer spanned, and they are divided up into 3 00:04:55;00 clips and 1 00:01:44;04 clip. None of the 5 minute clips will import (again, Error: Unknown), but the 2 minute clip was captured just fine. Could the other clips be corrupted? And are there any other free programs for this, or at least one that captures longer clips with the demo? (like the rest of the nation, I'm tight on funds)

Another update: I downloaded P2 Log Pro and the same thing happened (error), I tried doing it from my external HD, and got an error, and I tried it via USB and got an error. I can play this footage just fine in the camera and on the monitor in L&T and P2 Log Pro. I also tried the Repair thing on the camera, and it said NO REPAIR CLIP. Any last-ditch ideas? And does P2CMS stand for P2 Card Format Station or P2 Contents Management Software?

Hey, highlight the clip you want to import - mark the IN and OUT points in the log and transfer window, then drag it in to be logged. I have been successful in getting entire spanned clips this way in one drag, but I also I had to mark multiple in and out points to get entire clips in too, but either way the clips are logged problem solved, at least for now....

andrewcncpt, marking the In and Out points worked. Hopefully I can find a better way of doing this in the future, but this works for now. Thanks everyone!

Thats fine, and Im glad you got the clips in. You would still be better of trying to resolve this for future cases.
