I've only used it on the PC side so if you're on a mac this may differ, but to answer your questions: Its a great tool, Its worth way more than $40, and as for time it means I can set it up before a shoot and keep my laptop/external drive on my cart next to me and when I fill up a card I just pop it in the slot and it does everything I asked. The actual copy times I imagine are the same as manually copying the files, but the auto delete and folder naming are what makes it so slick. I know that when it says its done that I have a clean p2 card to put back in the camera. I've got two 8 gigs and really dont need anymore, although the rebate one when it comes will make things easier I suppose.
2nd that, great tool, will be even better(how is that possible?) with the upcoming new update(dont know when it happens on Mac)...and is definitely worth it every Penny...it saved me a lot of Stress, makes you Laptop be a little P2 store when setup the right way, and made my copy-sessions really safer, as a software is mostly more clever than a stressed technician...!
Go and get it!
p.s. i am on PC too...go Tony go!!
Any timescedule-news for the update??
Again, I must also vouch for the PC version (never used the Mac version but I suspect it is just as good) of P2 Genie. A great tool & worth the money! Wouldn't want to be without it. And I'm looking forward to the software's evolution.
Do I understand correctly that the P2 Genie can help store footage
on an external hard drive going through a laptop without an NLE?
Currently I am copying my 8 GB card from the camera in 1394 host
to a Lacie hard drive (and I have to use a hub; it won't work straight
from camera to drive like it says in the manual.)
If I got P2 Genie how would it work with a MacBookPro? It sounds like
it offers good file naming features.
I have Final Cut Express on the MacBookPro, so that doesn't support P2
and there's no PC-MCIA slot. Would I hook the camera to the laptop
and go though that to an external hard drive? What would be the
advantage compared to what I'm currently doing? Thanks!
I've read about it and even almost bough it once way back. Let me see if I understand correctly.
From what I remember it won't make the offloading faster just painless, so while I don't really need it it will make life easier because after a good set up it can make it so you pop the P2 in and hit one button for all of the following:
_ all clips will get copied to the internal or external HDD you chose.
_ clips are named as you set it up to do...
_ you can quickly ( < one minute) set up different clip naming parameters
_ and it will clear the card for you too?
ALSO, IS THIS THE TIME TO BUY IT?
though extremely slim, the possibility exists that they may raise the cost after revisions...
P2 Genie is fine, WHEN IT WORKS PROPERLY, It does not always give you what you want. For example: I am working with a Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz, 2Gb RAM. On more than 1 occasion the P2 Genie has created HIDDEN VOLUMES on my hard drive. You cannot see or erase them unless you use a program like "Cocktail" which shows all ther invisibles. I have had to trash P2 Genie preferences to get the program to behave properly. It usually happens if you do not assign a path for the files to go to when downloaded from P2 Card. It has happenned even when I did the above. i contacted Anders H, (program creator) and he told me that there are Mac OS issues with the program sometimes. Let me also state that I am an ADVANCED Mac user, having worked woith all Macs for over 20 plus years. that being said, be careful. Most of the time the program works fine, but BE AWARE of the possible downfalls of the program (at least in the Mac world)
