P2 footage dump without laptop or HVX deck?

Got a question for the HVX community out there.

Would the combination of a USB OTG drive and a Panasonic AJ-PCD2 card reader work alone as a solution to offload footage without a laptop/power source in the field?

I dont know the answer to that question, without a computer I would dump to an external harddrive via firewire and in that case I follow prompts that I see in camera. A blind USB dump would be useful, b/c it would be faster, but I dont know if its possible.

Well, that's interesting -- it might work, but you'd still need some sort of USB power source to power the PCD2 (it has two USB cables on it because it needs more power than one USB port can provide). So if you had a portable battery source of some type that had a USB port on it... then that might work.

You could also get a Nexto device that has direct P2 offloading capability, if you wanted to do it all-in-one with a purpose-built device.

Or, as xqzt already pointed out, you do have the ability to offload footage directly to a firewire drive, as long as you have a self-powered firewire drive.

Does it matter how the FW drive is formatted? Works for both PC and Mac?

And It wipes out all existing data on the drive, right?

The camera will format the drive itself, and yes it wipes out all existing data, and yes it works for both Windows systems and Mac systems.

I'd kinda doubt it will work- P2 cards are incredibly finicky if it's not a camera or P2 deck specifically for ingest. Not saying don't try just saying don't expect much...
