P2 footage archiving

Okay, I use a 300 gig External HD to back up my footage among some other stuff. I am seeing that p2 files take up so much of the space - is there any way to reduce the file size, like compress them or export to QT and still maintain the quality?

"not sure" - ??? uh, ok. i think the first order of business is to get a better grip on your gear.

that aside. there is a lot of opinion about hard drives. search this and other pro video forums. brands like LaCie, western digital, and maxtors lead the industry in drive failure.

i owned two lacies and they both instantly corrupted my files.

ive been using, iomega, owc, promax and now caldigit products for over a decade and not one of them has given me even an ounce of trouble. ok, i had one power supply die, but that was an easy fix.

back to your original question. i think the nature of the p2 content is that its compressed as it can be to begin with...

there are a lot of things you CAN do to manage project size. tell us a bit more about your workflow (how you transfer from the card to the drive. where you store what, etc...) and we can give you advice.

The files aren't getting any smaller.

Hard drives are NOT good LONG TERM archiving solutions.

LTO or SDLT tape is.

If you happen to choose HDs, then have your files on at LEAST 2 different drives.

You'll thank me later.
