P2 Dropouts

Ryan I looked at your file. It looks a bit scrambled, but there where some interesting bits.

It seems that P2 genie uses 0-4% cpu while idle and while checking for new cards.
When a card is detected and the copy process is active it uses about 15% cpu.

The kernel_task fluctuates from about 0-23% generally, but at the end of your log file it suddently jumps to 99.5%, with the system tasks using 99.7% of the machines power.
I suspects this is the point the system freezes.
Unfortunately Kernel task cover a lot of functionality both the kernel itself and all kernel extensions: both apples and panasonics.....

Thanks for the kernal testing info, as well as taking a look at my process log. That is very interesting that it jumps to 99.5% ...... I'll test out the kernal think and post that log as well. I'll be able to test it out tomorrow morning.

I wish I had a good excuse- but english is my first language, with spanish being my second. But I'm so bad at spelling that at time it seems like english is my second language .....

BTW- I'll have to wait until later today to test the Kernel thing, as I've gotten swamped, and I need to attent to some other things first. I'll post the log as soon as I have it.

UGHHH!!

I just got off a 12 day shoot in Tallahassee w/ the HVX200. I use my 15" 1.67 ghz PPC G4 Powerbook w/ 2 gigs ram to dump P2 cards to a 500gig G-Raid firewire drive using P2 Genie. I was locking up after every 4 cards or so for several minutes (not 15 seconds). It was increadibly frustrating to say the least. I have Many Apps on the system including FCP 5.1.1, Photoshop CS2, DVD Studio Pro 4.0.3, P2 Log, P2 Genie, Aperature, Toast Titanium, Skype, Firefox, Quicksilver, etc. etc. All apps are current versions.
I finally have a day off in NYC and follow Ander's instructions to create a log in the Terminal using "shark -1" and for the life of me I can't get the PB to lock up!! I have been mounting and dismounting P2 cards all day and the greatest delay I have experienced is 15 secs. The only difference in my configuration between Tallahasee and New York is I don't have the G-Raid drive up here, but a Lacie Porsche drive instead. I can't image the firewire drive is the culprit, but I am baffled..
I have 4 P2 cards, 2-4 gig cards serial #'s AD06A1950 and ADC06A0391, 2-8 gig cards serial #'s AAD06B0136 and AAD06A0484.
I will keep trying to recreate the Bug while running Ander's test of the Kernal extensions. I'm in NYC till 9/1. If anyone has any other ideas I would love to hear them.

It should be "shark -i" not -1.

Some things you could test:

- Battery power vs. PSU. the different Power Profiles.
- Try to let the machine go to sleep first, wake it up then mount the card.

Is this what the footage Veej was talking about looked like? I took my HVX out for it's first run on Saturday, then started getting things into FCP on Sunday. Everything came up like the picture below. I didn't import via drive images (didn't know until about that until just now) hopefully that's what this is all about.
If it's more complicated than just doing the .dmg trick, below is a link to a detailed run down of everthing I did.

Thanks for the help.

Here is a copy of my Console Log.

Here are two tests of my Kernel Extensions using Apple's CHUD Tool.
The 1st session is during a sucessful p2 card mount and dismount on my G4 powerbook pcmcia card slot. The 2nd Session is during an Unsucessful p2 mount and dismount. The Powerbook froze and needed a reboot.

Hope this helps,

Just bought a 1.67 Powerbook

Just bought a 1.67 Powerbook

Well I have been dumping my files via FW to my 12" laptop under Panther so I have not been able to actually view any of my HD footage. I just bought a 1.67 PB w/1g RAM so I could have Tiger and the card slot and boy was I jazzed.

I performed a clean install of the OS with the latest updates, repaired permissions, loaded Final Cut Studio with the latest update which was just released the other day (have not added anything from the extra folders - and not sure I need to, but am trying to save space) This machine is being set up for the sole purpose of buring dvds from each day's shoot and sending it out raw footage to clients. However, My card just will not mount and does not show up in the finder! Will P2 Genie exacerbate or solve this problem? Is there any diagnostic for the PCMCIA slot?

EDIT:
Just saw the suggestion from Anders, but not sure I feel comfortable going in as root - i don't want to make a mistake and void the warrenty on my machine if I can help it...

Did you install the P2 driver that came with the HVX? It is on the CD. (I forgot to do that when I got the HVX and I thought my PB was not working as well- then I realized I did not install the P2 Driver- installed it and all is well.

BTW-I have not been able to get my machine to freeze- (Which I'm glad for, but for the purposes of testing, does not help much .... sorry - I guess ....)

Partition

Well, I partitioned my drive and set aside 20g for the P2. I installed the CD on that volume, but not on the volume where the OS and FCP resides. I would think that wouldn't make a difference, but I am not the most savvy of computer users.

Try installing the driver form the CD onto your OS drive - that has worked for me, and hopefully it will work for you. It only takes up a small amount of space.

Well, that did the trick. Loaded the CD onto the OS volume and turned on the safety lock and it recognized it right away.

Thanks Ryan.

No problem, glad to help.

(Not that I'd actually admit this- but as I said I had the same problem when i first got my HVX, and fixed it accordingly. I later wiped my drive and did a clean install of everyhting, forgetting to reinstall the P2 driver- and I couldn't get the card to read- I was pretty upset / frustrated. That is until I realized that I had not installed the driver ... oops! :) )

You're not alone

You're not alone

I reformatted my machine, loaded the OS and updates then decided to partion the drive in half so I had to start over. When I got around to loading FCP studio, it wouldn't fit. (Holy crow, I had no idea that FCPStudio was 37gs)! I think I got about 2 hours of sleep last night after it was all said and done. So don't feel bad, I was 3 in the hole before even getting to this stage!
