P2 continous recording on FAT32

Hi

I have to record an event without breaks on P2 using a FAT32 drive. Unfortunatley the drive I'm copying the footage to is FAT32 and cannot go over 4GB clips at a time. Can anyone tell me how I can record the event without breaks?

Thanks

you CANT record live to a drive. thats why things like firestores exist.

you CAN record to a drive if the drive and camera are connected to a computer with appropriate capturing software (like adobe on-location)

and of course you CAN copy to a drive from your P2 cards, but again you'll need some sort of interface device. or if you copy from you camera, the camera cant be recording while the transfer is taking place.

triton5, I don't think you have anything to worry about. P2 itself uses FAT32, and it automatically spans clips to create new files when the current file exceeds 4GB. There won't be any breaks, P2 is made to do this job. Record the event, copy the footage off to a FAT32 drive, import the footage into your NLE and you'll have the entire event recorded continuously with no breaks. It handles splitting the files up and stitching them back together invisibly.

Hi Barry
Unfortunately I tried this before and when I try to open the spanned clip that's over 4GB, it says it's not a movie file and cannot be opened

There won't be any spanned clips over 4GB. The camera automatically splits files at the 4GB mark to keep that from happening...

Barry, I just did a test and and the camera recorded in one continous clip it says (spanned) next to it and again won't Read in FCP it didn't split the clips into 4GBs like you suggested

If you look at the files on the card, you'll see that the files are indeed spanned. P2 cuts off recording at the 4GB limit and creates new clips. It all looks to the camera as if it's one clip, or in P2 Viewer, but in the directory structure you'll see there's multiple clips.

Hi Barry
Could you tell me How to see the directory and the mulitple clips because i can only see the one clip still and if there are multiple clips from the one file how do I ingest these into FCP?

Thanks again in advance
