P2 confusion

I am soo confused... been searching the forums.

But at 720pn 24 how much time would I get on two 16gig p2 cards?

I thought 8gig was 12mins so 16 should be 24?

I think the different frame rates are confusing me...

a 4 gig card will give you 10 min at 720 24pN
so a 16 gig card is 4x10 = 40 minutes
Where you are getting confused is
perhaps when you shoot 1080 -
that is basically 1 gig per minute.

i get give or take 16 min of 720pn 24 on an 8 gig. so id say 32 min per 16 gig is more realistic

yeah, roughly 40 mins per 16GB card.

I shoot 25pn (I'm in PAL land), and I get about 34 mins to a 16GB card.

I can see why you're getting confused though, there are so many different ways to record so there are so many possible capacities of the same cards.

As Barry says, the 16 GB cards give slightly more pNative 24 that twice what 8 GB cards provide.

20 minutes versus 41 or occasionally 42 minutes.

How much footage will a 16GB take at 720/24PN 60fps? Just curious.

At any non-PN recording mode (in DVCPRO HD) you get 1 gig per minute.

In PN, it's dependent on the framerate. 2:30 minutes per gig for 24fps. 1:15 for 48fps. 5:00 for 12fps, and so on....

Thanks for the clear up...
What was confusing me was the N which I understand does the pull down for you,
so the extra frames are gone and in essence gives you more time.

So at 60fps I will get only 16mins, what about 30fps?

I will be buying Barry's DVD once I get my camera.

To add to the Native difference the way I understand it:

All 720p (HDTV broadcasts) are set up for 60p (59.94) so a 720/30p recording will have 60 saved frames. Just each of the 30 are duplicated (the Active frame and the Duplicate frame) so you cant tell when it changes. Each of these take up space and you get about 16 minutes on a 16 GB card.

In N or Native (Active frame) mode (30PN and 24PN), no duplicate frames exist and your recording increases by doubling the amount of space. You get about 40 minutes on a 16 GB card. But if you stream this, aka a live recording, the unit has to send 60 frames and the saved space is now taken for a tape or deck unit to record it.

Thanks to Barry Green's book THE HVX BOOK for helping to explain this elusive concept.

The N doesn't do the pulldown for you, that would imply that the CCDs are still running at 59.97, in the HVX the CCDs are reclocked to whatever frame rate you are running.
So at 720p24n it is literally only recording 24 frames with the internal clocks running at 24fps (23.98 I believe) the same for 12 or any other modes.

Here is a link to recording times at different modes
