P2 Cards on a Desktop Mac

Hi everyone, Michael Schoenfeld here,

(My apologies to Jarred & Co. if this sould be posted in the Hardware forum, but so many HVX people have expressed an interest in such a solution I "thought" it might be alright to post it here)

Usually I remain a lurker only, but due to the fact that this has been desired by many for a long time, I thought I'd share what I found.

UAD audio has a "PCIe card to expresscard34" adapter that "should" work for the Duelsystems P2 Card reader.

http://www.uaudio.com/products/uad/xpander/xtenda.html

Due to my being an audio geek as well as a professional photographer, I have ordered one of these PCIe cards (I have the duel adapter now).

I will report back as soon as the PCIe card arrives and I have had time to test it.

Could be cool - a P2 expresscard connection for your desktop - $99 bucks!

Additionally, my apologies if someone has already solved this, but I haven't seen such an inexpensive way to get P2 Directly into a desktop Mac/PC.

All the best,

Michael Schoenfeld

Update - P2 on a desktop Mac

Update - P2 on a desktop Mac

Wow,

Either I screwed up by posting this in the general forum, or everybody is on vacation, or nobody cares, or it's been solved some other cheaper way and I'm just way behind the curve.

Oh well, I got the card, installed it, and today I'll install the drivers needed and see if it's as plug and play as I hope - total cost (if it works) for P2 on a desktop Mac with really fast (Cardbus34) transfers? $200 Bucks for the Duel adapter and UAD PCIe card. In my "own private Idaho" I'm still thinking this is a real steal, IF it works.

Did I miss the real solution?

well, we are all waiting to see what you say. :)

If it works then GREAT, but being a mac user, I am used to getting the short end of the stick with this sort of thing, and will only get "excited" once something has been proven to work.

That being said, I hope it works so that we can have yet another solution!!!

I'm waiting Michael.

Your post is an hour old, and let us know what you know.

And please detail your hardware, and OS.

OK - Preliminary report (sorry David S for a lack o fBG info) -

Mac Pro (4 core) OS 10.4.10

UAD "Extenda" card (PCIe to expresscard34 adapter)

I installed both the P2 Drivers and the Duel Systems driver

but..........The Mac sees the PCIe card, but the duel Systems Adapter won't mount the P2 card.

I honestly did really have "quality time" to devote to troubleshooting yesterday, but the "101 level" plug and play didn't work.

Anyone with any troubleshooting ideas? The UAD card's instructions specifically state that it needs no UAD driver, and the computer recognizes the card.

I'd LOVE to see this work, so if any Mac Genius has a suggestion, fire away.

All the best,

Michael Schoenfeld

I will dive in a little deeper

Ooops,

Meant to say "Did NOT" have quality time yesterday, and I will try again today.

I cut tendon on my right middle finger last week, and typing is......... "Interesting" as of late to say the least.

Wish I can help Michael. It's the same with the Addonics EC/34 adapter on a MBP. It just won't mount the p2 card, but the DA will.

go figure

Well,

Damn..... Here's what know.

Looks like it'll be a fine card to run the UAD - Xpander audio plugin module -

and nothing else.

It has "activity lights on the card that light up when I plug the DA in, but "no -mountie"

Oh well, nice try Einstein. Woulda been slick though.

Evidently the Amtron solution is 32 bit PCI-X only. Intriguing for me since I have a Magma 32 bit expansion chassis attached to a 64 bit slot on my G5 (running Pro Tools cards). I emailed Amtron today to see if they think it will work. I sort of doubt it, but we'll see what they say...
