P2 card won't format, clips won't delete

Okay, so I finally got me a HPX172, and tried it out for the first time yesterday. I am not clear about 2 things:

1st: Should the P2 card be formatted if it's brand new and blank, or should it only be formatted once it's full and you've backed up all your clips? I tried to do format before recording any clips and the "format" option is dimmed.

2nd: How do you delete clips?
I've only got 6 clips so far (card nowhere near full), and when I try to delete them following the procedure outlined in the manual, the "delete" option is dimmed (unavailable).

Is the card write protected?

No it's not. I didn't write-protect it because it was blank.

Make sure your framerate is the same when deleting as is what you shot.

there is a flip lock switch on the back edge of the p2 card. check that.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replies. I'm sure this probably would never have happened if my hpx had come with a free copy of Barry's book. As it turns out, the solution was just a matter of "click-selecting" the clip properly (manual doesn't say anything about this). I assumed the clip was selected because it had a yellow border around it.... WRONG! It's only selected when you click-select it with the joystick (can't be done from the remote control), and the border turns blue. ONLY THEN are the "format" and "delete" options available. The "write-protect" switch had nothing to do with it, mine was off the whole time.
