I'm a nembie looking to get the HVX-200. I've done a lot of research on the camera. There are 2 things that i still can't figure out with the research i did.

1st. I am confused with what formats you can record on the tape, and which formats you have to record to a P2 card.

2nd. In order to capture uncompressed HD, what setup would i need. Also, can you capture compressed HD through firewire.

any information that you could give me, would be great.

The only format that can be recorded to tape is DV (DV25/MiniDV).

You cannot record uncompressed HD. All HD video will be encoded using the DVCProHD codec, regardless of whether you use P2 media, a hard-disk based recordders like the Focus Enhancements FS-100, or a computer to capture directly from the DV port.

Not entirely true. You can come out of the camera via the HD component output and record to a NLE with a sufficient raid set up.

So the camera doesnt actaully record to a DVC-Pro tape, it just uses the DVC-Pro codec?? So the camera records to mini DV in SD? Not HDV, correct?

Correct. HDV plays no part in the HVX200. It is DVCPRO HD at 100 Mbps and 4:2:2 color space. it's a more robust codec that is the same as is found in the Varicam.
