P2 card to Avid PC workflow

I am about to start shooting a short using 2 4g P2 cards. Previously I used the HVX200's minidv but I am looking to step up. Can I transfer the info off the data cards onto a laptop that does not have Avid on it then transfer to my workstation that has avid later? Can I transfer the info directly into external hard drives then hook them up to my workstation later? If I download to the laptop or external drives multiple times will avid have trouble finding the data? Are there any tools that i can download that will make the process simpler?

It is no problem to Backup the data while shooting and import them into avid later.

Avid reads the files only if the are in the folder AVID MediaFiles/MXF/1

But it is always important to save the original folders from the P2 card. Those are your "Master Tapes".

I would always recommend to backup the data twice while shooting. A RAID-1 is perfect for that. Afterwards you can copy one Copy into the Avid folder and import them in AVID with the MediaTool.

upreyes,

If you put your mxf files into the Avid MediaFiles/mxf/1 folder and some of the media is somehow lost or corrupted, how do you trace back to your P2 folder "Master Tapes" to reconstitute that lost media? What if you have say, 100 hours of material?

Scott B.... my process is to take the P2 data, back it up immediately to DVD, then copy the Video and Audio files onto the MXF/1 folder. Then, in the Avid, after I have the media in a bin, I consolidate them and delete the originals. This associates a project with the media, which helps in deleting files later. If you get footage lost, or corrupted, all you really need to do is reload the files back into the MXF/1 folder and open Avid up. Avid will relink and associate the media with the clips once you open the application.
