P2 card size

hey barry ,the 64 gb p2 transfers at 6gb a minute?
Yes.
wow, can i grt that speed through my duel adapter to my mac book pro
If you have a hard disk array that supports 6GB/minute, then, probably, yes. If you're just transferring to an internal drive, no way, because the drives can't sustain 6GB/minute.
or from my hvx170 -firewire 400 to manbook?
No possible way, because firewire 400 only supports around 2GB/minute as a practical maximum.

whats the fastest with the 64gb p2 card.
Depends on what the weakest link in the chain is. If you transfer a 64GB card through PCI express onto a 3-drive SATA RAID, you should be able to get 6GB/minute. I got 3.4GB/minute out of a 16GB card transferring it to a software RAID on my laptop.

Just got a 32 from B&H and stamped on it reads "A Series". On dvinfo.net Jan says "The "A" series denotes an uptick in the record and transfer speeds, it is now 800Mbs up from 640Mbs."

So I guess a 32 is at 800Mbs Barry.

My 32 is an "R" Series... :crybaby:

What I don't understand is this. How come Panny can make a 5 slot firewire800/USB2 P2 card reader yet no one can figure out how to make a single slot one? A single slot firewire800/USB2 reader would go great with these snazzy new "A" series cards. Better yet why doesn't Panasonic just make one and sell them for like $200? Still probably make a pretty penny off them and people would get it over the Dual in a heartbeat.

WOW, I was thinking this exact same thing like a few hours ago but never got around to posting it. Amazing.

But to answer your question, I think its because Panasonic would have to discontinue that 5-card reader because its such a waste of space. A single p2 card reader would sell like hot cakes.

If they could make it like an external drive where you use it on both ur MacPro and MacBook Pro....oh man HEAVEN!

Ok, super newbie here. I just got an hvx-200a. After experiencing the ease of use regarding the P2 workflow I am slightly kicking myself for not getting the 170... The 200a is a bit heavy...
Anyway, that's another story. I am sure I'll get use out of the dv deck from clients who request it.

My question is, dumb as it might be, is there any reason why I need to have the P2 cards be the same capacity? For instance, the camera came with a 16 gb card. I am now looking into a 32 gb card for more space, etc. Is there any benefit to getting another 16 card instead of having a 16 and a 32?
I am a student and I primarily shoot documentary with some news and music video work thrown in on the side.
Thank you for your help!

I'll answer just because I like the way you spell your name. The larger cards take longer to fill and longer to offload, but aside from that caveat, there is no reason to use one over the other.

That said, the "A-Series" cards are supposed to offload faster, but my 4GB cards, which have no series designation, still offload much faster than the 16GB R-Series we're using for our productions. :)

Also, it doesn't matter which slot you've got the mixed cards loaded into. It is about when they're seated when it comes to deciding which slot gets the data first.

DMC, or anyone else, where can I buy a 64 G in Canada? (Online I mean). I cant find any. I am in Inuvik, NT, so cant get to a real store before this summer. I have a 16g but I was planning on geting a 32 G on ebay for about 1600$. I sit worth to wait to get a 64G this summer (I'd be in Montréal). I can live for now with one 16 g but...

I bought my camera etc., at Lorne Lapham in Vancouver BC.

Really terrific to deal with - he actually brought it over to Victoria for me (hand delivered it no-less).

I'm not sure what they do in the way of online sales but I'm sure that he could work something out for you.

I heard some rumors of a 128Gig card to be released at NAB so who knows what that may do to pricing on the lesser sized cards.

Why do people have an aversion to using the "single slot" $119.00 Duel Adapter instead? Since P2 has been out for quite a few years and there has been no low cost USB/FW solution, I would say that Panasonic doesn't intend to create one or they would have already. According to those in the know, there is a lot more to building a P2 card reader through FW or USB than just a slot reader, there are electronics involved that basically function somewhat like their own computer. That is why you haven't and probably won't ever see a cheap, FW or USB P2 card reader. The architecture needed to read and process the P2 cards is already present in the Express card connection, hence why we can use a cheap Duel adapter.

I have been using the Duel for about two years and I love it. I guess for desktop use it isn't great but for location with a laptop, it has been excellent, much faster offloads than my old G4 PB. Reliable, cheap and solid.

I bought my hpx170 from them (recieved it yesterday) but I am still waiting for my 16g card (used on ebay, 900 CAN) Other than that, Lorne is the cheapest place and very good service! Hand delivered! :-) wow. I'll wait for my other card, see how the 64 G brign down prices for 16 or 32. As for 128 G... I fear the price!! But good news.

Bit concerned that my 64gb card wont read on my notebook - my 16's are fine. Trying to understand why the 64 would be any different. I know its faster, but on the laptop its still just like a media drive.
