P2 Card Questions

1. How much DVCPRO HD will fit on a 16GB P2 card?
2. Does this mean that the 32GB cards will be able to hold double that amount?
3. I need to buy some cards soon. Is there any reason to not get the new 32GB cards and instead just buy more of the 16GB ones?

Thanks!

1. Depends on 1080 or 720, and your frame rate. It's anywhere from 1 to 2.5 minutes per gig, so 16 to 41 minutes.

2. Yes.

3. Not really. 32's are a bit less per gig than 16's. But 32's will probably be in quite short supply, you may find 16's more readily available.

1. I plan to shoot at 1080-30P. How much files size per minute will this take?
2. Is there a formula for figuring this out?

Thank you.

The "formula" is this:

Full datarate DVCPRO-HD is 100Mbps .. or about a gig a minute. So 16mins to a 16gb card.

1080/60i, and 720/60p are both full rate DVCPRO-HD.

Both 1080/30p and 1080/24p are recorded within a 1080/60i datastream, so they are 100Mbps too. (So all the 1080 formats are 100Mbps)

720 is a little more complex.

All forms of 720p record a full 60 frames to the datastream. So 720/60p, 720/30p, 720/24p, all other 720/p frame-rates, are all still recorded as a 720/60p datastream at a full 100Mbps. Still about 1min/gig.

But. 720pN works differently. It only actually records the framerate you shoot at. (So no duplicate frames to "fill in" to the full datarate.)
So: 720/60pN is 100Mbps. But 720/30p is only half the frames, so half the datarate: 50Mbps. So all the other 720/pN data-rates depend directly on the framerate, based on 100Mbps for 60fps .. or about 1.67Mb/frame.

So the formula for 720/pN datarate is: (100/60)*framerate
