P2 card NOT using it's full size.

I recently got my hpx170 and so far it's been great. One problem though. The card the it comes with, the 16g card finally got pushed all the way yesterday to the zero minute mark. I had a few clips of dvcpro50 and 720pn x 60 clips but 99% of the clips were shot in plain old dv (as I'm waiting to get more memory to shoot hd until the 64's get back in stock.)

I was in dv when i hit the zero minute mark and had been for a while if that matters. I dumped out all the clips and that's when i noticed the folder says it's only holding 11.79gigs! but the card was 100% full, so why it's it 16, or at least 15.9?

also when will panasonic get on the 128g cards? (e series) and is there ANY place that has 64g e series in stock? i found 2 sites that claimed it but both admitted the site was incorrect.

typically no data storage device actually holds what it says it does. a brand new, empty 120 gig hard drive actually only holds about 112 gigs or so.

when i shoot HD to my 16gig cards they usually fill at about + or - 14gigs

Just in case any extra crap is on the card, I would do a format in-camera....I more often then not use this instead of deleting clips from a computer, as more often then not this function is quite buggy....I've re-installed the OS on more then one occasion on my field dumper(I love that term) to re-gain the ability to delete clips, but eventually it seems every system I've had has lost the ability to delete clips...I don't trust it.

You should be getting a little over 14 GB on the card. That will come out to be a little over 17 minutes of 720/1080 60. Double the time for DV 50 and quadruple the time for DV.

Be patient with the 64GB cards. It reminds me when the 8 GB cards were hard to find.

128 GB cards will come later.

I only use my in camera formatter.

So if I'm getting 11 only then something is off. Anything i should do?

Why be patient with the 64's? This 16g card just doesn't cut it and buying 2 32's will cost me an extra $200 I think.

I actually noticed that the e-series cards seem to hold a little less than the A series cards. My 16GB A card holds 42 min of 720PN and my 16gb E card only holds 36 min. I'm thinking its because of the memory technology and the e series are probably more likely to have bad sectors that are marked as such. (which is normal with any solid state media).

This is the first I've heard of this. Is anyone else finding the same discrepancy?

I can confirm that my 16 GB P2 cards (not sure what series, but they are the original type, not the newer, cheaper ones) likewise hold about 42 minutes of 720/24pn.

That's weird, I own both a 32Gb A series card and 32Gb E series and I can record exact same time on both, about 85 minutes of 720p24pN (tested 'em both during a shoot). Maybe your 16Gb E series got a small defect?

how should one go about handling this then, is there a panasonic email for warranties? (well I'm sure there is, but do you know it?)

i would ALWAYS choose TWO smaller cards over ONE larger one. with one card, shooting is dead while it transfers. with two smaller ones you can shoot to one while the other transfers.

NOT having to stop production is worth way more than $200 - at least in my world.

will it number them so that when they are uploaded they will be in chronological order still?

Have you ever noticed those numbers that change really quickly in the corner of your on set monitor, or maybe when you are in your 'edit suite'. Those are called - TimeCode. Typically used during the edit to get the footage in chronological order... Any of the edit programs will allow you to import and sort according to timecode.

Mon Dieu!

not sure what you mean by "uploaded"? but if you are asking will the content on the cards be named in sequence, the answer is yes.

Agreed, but nothing beats TWO larger cards!
