P2 & Avid Meridien

Not an editor, but can an old Meridien system work w/P2 files which are mxf? How about standard def DVCPRO 50 shot on P2; client has a BetaSP deck and wants to get toes wet in the HD pond.
I'd like to use my HPX/HVX cameras on this gig but I'm not sure about compatability with this old Avid system. How old is the Meridien generation?

Meridien is pretty old, from an NLE standpoint. It's definitely pre-MXF. I'm pretty sure that HD support is non-existent, as well. Those are both features that were added when Meridien went the way of the dodo and MC Adrenaline replaced it.

The highest resolution you'll be able to work with is 1:1 uncompressed--which is good--but that's SD. I'm not sure if there's native DV50 support or not--either from tape or file-based sources. Ultimately, your HVX/HPX footage would need to be on a tape and then captured into the system, vs. imported as we're accustomed to with more modern NLEs.

thanks, I was afraid of that. What if I gave client a HD full of DVCPRO 50 QT files using P2Log/HD Log to bypass the MXF route?
I'm trying to avoid shooting tape or xdcam.

Might be possible. I would suggest getting the latest package of Avid Codecs and installing them on both systems. The biggest question/concern I would have would be whether the Meridien Avid natively supports DVCPRO50. If it does it will "Fast Import" those clips, which is essentially just a copy/rewrap process. If it doesn't, it will convert them to whatever compression you have set in your import Media Creation settings. Definitely test!
