We want to take P2 footage shot at 24fps and dump it to DVCPROHD for archival purposes. But we also want to be able to playback the material from tape at 1080/23.98PsF (upconverted) for mastering. The AJ-HD1200 (and newer 1400) are capable of playing back tapes in this manner if they were shot with a Varicam at 24fps (24 over 60).
So here's my question:
Is it possible to put the P2 material into an FCP timeline (720/24p) and dump it to the AJ-HD1200 over FireWire, which would (in theory) create a tape that acts just like it was shot on Varicam (flagging only the original 24 frames for playback)?
Our main reasons for wanting this workflow is that the rendering time and disk space requirements for upconverting hours of P2 footage is ridiculous. And then, we would have to archive to HD-D5, which is very costly when it comes to tape stock. We have also considered data archiving, but we would prefer to have the material on tape so it is instantly accessible at any SD/HD resolution or frame rate.
Thanks,
Paul
