I am working on a limited budget documentary shooting on the HVX-200 at HD 720/23.98. We are just gettting ready to shoot 5 weeks of interviews and trying to figure the best way convert the HD mxf to SD Avid compatible media for offline editing on a Avid Express Pro. We are going SD due to not being able to afford the Disk space needed to edit in HD.
So the editor and I were discussing the best way of offlining in SD 23.98 than conforming up to HD 1080P/23.98 at the online.
Which brings to me to my workflow question. Is there a way of converting the mxf files to a Proxy file?

The tools that I have at my disposal are the following:

Macbook Pro OS 10.5 with:
-Final Cut Pro 5.1.4
-HDLog Pro
-P2 Viewer

Mac G5
-Avid Express Pro HD 5.7

Check out this workflow. You'll do pretty much the same, but instead of selecting DNxHD during the transcode, you'll opt for one of the SD resolutions (ie. DV).

Just remember to keep all your original HD media so that you can online later. That means you'll still need hard drive space to offload the P2 cards. Hard drives are pretty cheap, and computers are plenty fast, which is why you'll find a lot of folks just skipping the offline and editing at online resolution.

Thanks for the link. I will do some testing as soon as I can.

We would edit with the online resolution, unfortunately, we don't have the budget to buy 4 TB editng drive in additon to the 8 TB for Orig./Bk-Up media.
