P2 16gb?

I worked on a documentary shoot earlier this summer. We went through 52 card loads in four days. It was a nightmare keeping up with two HVX200 cameras shooting cards as fast as I could download them, reformat them, and get them back to the two shooters (the director and cinematographer). I was working as media manager about 50% of the time. P2 is great, but for high shooting ratio doc shooting you either need a zillion cards or a media manager handling downloads. It worked out well from my perspective (no problems, though I did a unix file system level binary compare on the card transfers prior to formatting a card just in case). The director liked P2, but was concerned about the added cost of a 50% full-time equivalent crew person doing media management. 16G cards will help this.

what a nightmare the transfer time must be for the new 16gb cards... i hope they sell new p2 stores with bigger hard drives..

I think the speed of the 16 GB will be faster then the 8GB with 5 cards slot 800M Ieee1394 dowloading can be much more faster then before. I think that is the whole idea of memory with doulbling the memory you need to increase the transfer speed.

Why?

Larger capacity P2 cards reduce the frequency with which you have to swap, offload, and catalog. If anything, the larger capacity cards will reduce stress and the workload.

because it's a nightmare with the 8gb card transfer time (with bu check)... i understand your logic, but it will be like waiting for a bunt cake to cook in the oven... i might have to get one of them egg timers...

Thanks. I really hope either the CinePorter or 16GB cards get here fairly soon. Any documentary shooters using the HVX? How are you recording if you are?

I will be going out to the woods to shoot my first session this weekend (for ten days). For what I'm doing I NEED long shoot times. Since the 16 gig cards and the Cineporter are not yet available and I don't want to spend several thousand dollers on a temp solution (8 gig cards), I'll be shooting SD/Stereo onto tape. Certainly not ideal but you hafta use what you got. At this point I'm very thankful that Panasonic included a dv tape drive with this camera.

This will be my first official use of the HVX—wish me luck.

Good luck! Post some footage of whatever you're shooting when you get back, and let us know how it went!

You really need 3 cards....2 in camera, one offloading.
It takes a long time to offload, about as much time to shoot (if shooting continuously).

Thanks Green Hornet; I was afraid that would be the answer.

I now share this concern as well.

Good luck Gary! Keep us posted on how it went.

As a backup plan, I'll be selling a kidney or possibly a limb ( whichever fetches more ) and buying three 16GB cards if the CinePorter does not come through by November. If the 16GB cards aren't here by then, I'll go with three 8GB. I just hope the film gods come through with the CinePorter.:nads:

With a P2 Store or a properly functioning PCMCIA/PCCard slot equipped laptop, you should have no trouble offloading the P2 contents faster than you can shoot, especially if you shoot in a native mode.

will P2 be replaced?

will P2 be replaced?

Will P2 will be replaced by a media that can be mass produced and lends itself to competition?

Here are some pointers:

Samsung has announced a flash memory based replacement for HDD in the form factor of 1.8" HDD. This drive has almost the same dimensions as the P2 card. It has all the advantages of the P2 and more.

It uses 16x 2GB chips so more capacity (500 GB?)
more speed 100+ Mbps (potentially).
Cheaper ( the 32 GB drive is expected to cost $900 at introduction )

Because of its form factor, it can be used in music/ video players, laptops, camcorders and so there is the economies of scale and the benefits of competition (The 1.8" HDD is currently used in many ultra mobile laptops, iPods, Sony DCR –SR 100)

The drive:

Also flash memory speed has been upped to around 38 mbps Sandisk extreme IV:

Once mass produced this drive could spawn readers (probably e-SATA) that like today’s memory card readers will be inexpensive and very fast (and perhaps Flash based FireStores!)

I'm not sure where you made the leap from 32GB to 500GB -- did you mean Gigabits (Gb)? Also, P2 already does 100+ Mbps, it has to because that is the bitrate for DVCProHD.

Anyway, 32GB per P2 card today would be great, especially at that price, but I think it is premature to call P2 dead. But I applaud any and all technical advances in the solid-state area, if Panasonic were to put Samsung chips into their P2 cards, that would be fine with me.

If panasonic wants to be in HD market with new AJHD2000 camera with p2 cards for broadcaster in 2007 then they have no choice but to anounce the 16GB for that market. That is the only way they can sale P2 HD. Well in HVX200 world that will be big benefit for the market. Just prey that they sell lots of AJHD2000 so the price for the 16GB fall very fast for our market.

Same reason that as of a month ago some were still paying $550 for 1 gig but $1300 for an 8 gig. For some people being able to have more space in the camera at a time is worth it even if you are paying more per gig. Not me though, I currently only have 4 gigs and won't use 8 gigs untill the price is reasonable (around when the 16 gig comes out).

I'll only move past 4GB cards once an archiving format (Blue-ray, HD-DVD, etc.) becomes practical and affordable. It might not be until 32GB+ cards come out. In the meantime, I'll probably acquire more "cheapie" 4 giggers. :)

the 32GB drive uses 16 chips of 2GB each. 4GB and 8GB chips have been announced and guess 32GB will arrive one day.

the link to panasonic paper mentions P2 =80MBps/640Mbps.( is the 80Mbps on page5 a typo?)
ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/papers/P2-WP.pdf

P2 card dimensions(H x W x D): 5.0mm x 54mm x 85.6mm
1.8" HDD form factor dimensions(H x W x D): 8.0mm x54mm x78.5mm

The main point of the post was to show the huge potential of the 1.8" form factor vs the P2.
The design of the propriety P2 card revolves around the SD card being a standard, where as the 1.8" HDD form factor is already a standard.

Any standardization of digital recording/storage medium will be of immense help to the end users, and a good bet today seems to be this 1.8" form factor flash disc as announced by Samsung.

Don't count on it. Go to the Cineporter sticky thread. It's been delayed.

I take it a PCMCIA/PCCard will allow you to dump to a laptop without the camera being hooked up?

How much do these things cost as it seems like P2 store would be kind of useless if one has a laptop equiped with such stuff.

Give it a try on the net,

i think you can get such a laptop in the states for 800 bucks, i am using this method with a 1000 euro laptop here (about 1250 dollars) and its working really fine.

If you can "afford" the time to copy the footage to the laptop then its fine, if you would be alone or just without help and you had to keep shooting, you would vote for a p2 store.

I just ordered p2 genie for pc half an hour ago, its a reasonable price and if it works like people say, it will be a great help for my workflow: insert p2 in laptop-automatic or manual copy-AND recheks that the copy was succesfull, like a p2-store would do!

here is a quote from ahsg from a different forum:" HIGHLY recommend this product. Turns ANY laptop with a PCMCIA slot into a P2 store..."

I will report how it works, but i think with a laptop and a pcmcia it makes life easier and safer...you got also the option to copy to two different directions fro redundancy or copy different cards to a single folder, for easy import in your nle...!
