P2 16gb?

when did the 8gb card come out,or another way to phrase this question; what's the frequency for panasonic bringing out cards with higher specs/storage.

Barry, I will not hold you to any answers but when the 16gig hits the market, what is your prediction on the cost drop on the 4 and 8 gig?

This is open to others to guess as well, but please leave educated ones. This is not the price is right, so no underbidding by $1. :)

No, really, I dont see reason for a price drop. I dont see why there would be an expensive 16gb card, but have cheap ones that are the same quality. If they were upgraded in quality, like model or something, maybe. Like an outdated camera.

Think of it as a correlation.

I say 16gb's will debut at $2000, 8gb's will have dropped by that time to about $900, and 4gb's will be going for about $400.

Aw fiddlesticks.
Why wouldnt you buy two 8gb cards and save the extra 200 for something else?

Same reason that as of a month ago some were still paying $550 for 1 gig but $1300 for an 8 gig. For some people being able to have more space in the camera at a time is worth it even if you are paying more per gig. Not me though, I currently only have 4 gigs and won't use 8 gigs untill the price is reasonable (around when the 16 gig comes out).

Thanks. I really hope either the CinePorter or 16GB cards get here fairly soon. Any documentary shooters using the HVX? How are you recording if you are?

I am currently directing a feature-length documentary with the HVX and Varicam. I use 3-8 gig P2 cards in the HVX, hot swapping and downloading through my Mac G4 to a 100gig 7200rpm G-tech mini. At the end of the day I download the GTech to the editorial G5 Mac(FCP), then archive to Dual Layer DVD (8 gig capacity/DVD).

Hey MotionMagic,

we shot a documentary in Ital for 1 month, using 6 4gig cards(would have prefered 3 8gigs, but werent available and too expensive too..)and it worked ok.
In normal filming no problem, but interviews can be a hastle: make sure 2 have 3 8gig cards at least an an operator who can walk out the room and download the cards to a laptop...!

Good Luck!(p.s. we were not shooting 1minute/1gig, but in dvcpro..1080 would have been impossible in interview situations..!)

Thank you for the information kinophiile and hvx_germanboy. I am not shooting until October or November, so I just hope ( fingers crossed ) that the CinePorter is out by then.

If the 16GB were out by then, could I get away with two of them or is it a problem with how long it takes to offload the cards? Has anyone heard when the PCMCIA to USB is due ( last I heard for shipping was Oct 1 )?

Most of my interviews will be fairly controllable, so what about going into the computer for those and the P2 cards for everything else?

You really need 3 cards....2 in camera, one offloading.
It takes a long time to offload, about as much time to shoot (if shooting continuously).

You need the ability to have a fresh/ empty card ready to replace the full one you are removing from the camera. The camera will be writing to the other card while you are removing/ replacing the full one. You can't do that with only 2 cards.
The smaller the cards, the more often you will be doing the shuffle.

11 minutes for 4 gig
22 minutes for 8 gig
44 minutes for 16 gig.

If you are loading/ unloading the card...pressing all the buttons, and erasing the cards, time going through the menu's and checking for correct led response..knock of at least 60 seconds to do that (a minute).

That should give you an idea of the process, and how much time you will NOT be monitoring other camera/ subject activaties.
