Awesome!!! Thanks for making, i'm interested in a grip, so this was much appreciated.

So that little cable is not needed for video mode? Only works as a remote shutter in stills mode?

Wouldn't it be awesome if they made one with xlr's and then the little cable would plug in the mic port. ahhhh, wishful thinking. Probably not that hard to make, would just need to be taller or deeper.

Yes... you can disconnect it in video or photo mode. It's just used to make the shutter button on the grip work. You can also use the shutter button AND an external shutter release for things like timelapse control.
 
It's great for time lapses. Actually, as I ponder to change camera systems, I will just keep the GH2 as my main "timelapser".
