Outfitting a red

The school I teach at is making the jump from SD to HD. We are going to be receiving a grant for the upgrade. I plan to buy three HVX 200, and 1 red cage 1. I want to outfit these cameras as much as possible with the initial purchase, mainly because I think the grant will be a one time good deal. I have a pretty good idea on what to get for the HVX's. Not so for the red, Jim or Jarred or any one on the A Team, could you give me some suggestions for accessories? Mainly, a matte box, field monitor, sticks, head also a ball park cost on a media drive? I have read a little on editing footage, as I understand it either Avid Nitris or Final Cut Pro are the only options, is that correct? As far as a broadcast monitor and computer monitors for the editing suite, any suggestions? I have to formulate my request by next week, so I don't have a lot of time to put things together. Any help would be appreciated.

I think that you should wait until the Red One comes out. But I'm not Jim, I would reccomend the cine glass lens for the Red, Red Cage, Red Drive, Red Flash, I'm not sure about Avid Nitris or Final Cut Pro editing 2k, 4k or 2540p but I know they'll edit 1080p, 1080i and 720p. Some accessories haven't been announced yet though too. I hope this helps, and for questions like that, this place is probably your best bet for answers.

I've been talking with the fine folks at Avid educational, I think I have a grasp now on a 2k/4k post workflow. I'm still in the dark on what could be used for a location monitor, any suggestions? Also what is the physical size for the red lense, or a matte box I should consider? I wish I could wait for the camera to come out, but you have to act when funding is available, so I have to plan the purchase of everything now. Thanks!

As we all know, we can't really have a solid estimate on how much you will need for the camera plus accessories. However, there are some good postings here on this forum written by very logical people. I believe the thread was called something like "How to pay for RED camera."

On the post-production side though, in my opinion, it will be wise to go with Final Cut Pro than Avid Nitris.
First off, you could buy about five editing machines with the money you can buy one Nitris system. Secondly, with current state of post production, I don't think you will be doing any 4k work, because it's just too much of money we are talking about (ie, data storage). There aren't too many big companies do that at this point.

If you're going with FCP system, you could handle 2k resolution with reasonable budget. FCP 5 on Apple G5's with AJA lo video In/Output deck will let you handle up to 2k 10 bit uncompressed video. Plus, I heard Apple Cinema display (30") had it's price dropped by a lot, maybe a grand? But
I'm sure you could find better monitors for better use with 2k resolution if that's the resolution you're looking into.

Oklahoma City Community College, come on over.

After a lot of research we chose to stay with Avid, for one it is still the industry standard. Two its color correction capability is far superior than anything else I've seen out there, and thats where FCP falls short. In the teaching realm we have to prepare the student for the industry, while avid is somewhat user unfriendly a student who learns it can easily make the jump to FCP. However because of FCPs lack of sophisticated color correction, we can not justify changing, it would leave an area of instruction unfulfilled. If I had my rathers for cutiing I'd put them on Vegas. However we feel it is important to offer a system that the student can take a film all the way through every phase of its life.

BTW if your looking for a film school ours is two years in length, down and dirty hands on skill and mechanics of making a film. If that isn't enough, we have an Oscar winning producer teaching film business.

So enough for cheap plugs, about the lens. I can't seem to find any info on it has the barrel size been published? I didn't see it on the web site.
